Railway to launch Ro-Ro service for cars; a game-changing move set to revolutionise tourist travel across India

Konkan Railway is set to launch a unique 'Roll-on Roll-off' (Ro-Ro) service for private vehicles between Kolad and Goa. If successful, Indian Railways plans to expand this service to major tourist routes across the country

In a move set to transform travel on the scenic Konkan coast, Konkan Railway is preparing to introduce a new ‘Roll-on Roll-off’ (Ro-Ro) service specially designed for private vehicles, including cars and SUVs. A pilot project is in the works to transport these vehicles in train wagons from Kolad to Goa, offering passengers the comfort of sitting inside their own cars while enjoying the train journey.

The initiative aims to ease traffic congestion along the busy Konkan Highway, a lifeline for travellers heading from Mumbai to Goa. Drawing inspiration from the highly successful Ro-Ro truck service already operational between Kolad and Mangalore, Konkan Railway is now extending the concept to private commuters for the first time.

The existing Ro-Ro service for commercial vehicles has already proven to be a hit among truck drivers ferrying goods from western Maharashtra to Kerala. It has helped save precious fuel, reduced road wear and tear, cut travel time, and significantly eased highway congestion.

The popular Mumbai-Goa road trip, often stretching 10–12 hours, is frequently marred by traffic snarls and long queues. The upcoming Ro-Ro service offers a stress-free alternative, passengers can board the train with their vehicles at Kolad station and sit back as the train carries them comfortably to Goa. The journey, expected to take around 24 hours, not only promises ease but also contributes to reduced carbon emissions and safer travel.

Here’s how it will work: travellers drive their vehicles from Mumbai to Kolad station, load them onto the Ro-Ro train, and then relax as the train glides down the scenic Konkan route, all from the comfort of their own cars. No more navigating through traffic, dealing with road fatigue, or worrying about road conditions.

The pilot Ro-Ro service is slated to begin on August 27. If successful, Indian Railways plans to expand the service to major tourist circuits across the country, potentially revolutionising long-distance road travel.

With smoother journeys, reduced environmental impact, and a boost to regional tourism, this new Ro-Ro initiative by Konkan Railway promises to make road trips more enjoyable than ever.
