Bettiah: In a troubling development, police in West Champaran district has recovered the body of an 18-year-old youth who went missing on March 27 this year, said police on June 2.

The deceased identified as Amit Kumar was a resident of San Sariya, whose decomposed body was recovered from a firm near Chandravat river under the jurisdiction of Bairiya police station on May 31.

According to police, a case regarding Kumar’s disappearance was filed at the Musaffil police station of Bettiah on March 30 which was being investigated by the police. Meanwhile an unidentified body was recovered from a firm near Chandravat river on Saturday. The family members of deceased later identified the body as Kumar on the basis of a belt attached to the cloth.

Upon recovery of the body, a FSL team also visited the spot and collected samples from there. The body was subsequently sent for an autopsy and being kept at GMCH for a DNA test, said police in an official statement issued on Monday.

Police on the basis of technical and human input have arrested two suspects namely Phool Mohammad and his son Raju Miyan, both residents of the same locality.

According to media reports, Kumar was a former classmate of Raju Miyan and the duo often used to visit each other’s home. Kumar also had a telephonic conversation with Raju before stepping out of his house for the last time.

Days after the disappearance of Kumar, Phool Mohammad also reportedly visited his house and indirectly warned Kumar’s family members. The family of the deceased have alleged that Kumar was murdered over a love affair. They further have claimed that Kumar was also kept in captivity for a month before he was brutally killed and cut into three pieces by his murderers.

The family of the deceased have also alleged the local police officials for negligence. They alleged that despite repeated pleas, the case was not investigated properly.

The news of recovery of Kumar’s decomposed body angered the villagers who jammed the Betiah-Nauthan road on Sunday morning and staged a strong protest against the brutal murder. Learning about the protest, officials of the administration arrived on the spot and assured swift action into the case.

The police on the other hand has suspended SI Satish Kumar, who was tasked with investigating the case. Another official linked with the case has also been called back to police headquarters. The case is being further probed by the authorities
