External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar stated that India managed to de-escalate tensions with Pakistan by securing a mutual agreement to halt military operations and cross-border firing — a development reached through direct bilateral engagement. Speaking in an interview with a Danish news outlet, Dr. Jaishankar revealed that this understanding followed a strong retaliatory strike by India on the morning of May 10. He explained that this action came in the aftermath of a major terrorist incident in April, with militants operating from across the border, enjoying significant state backing and freedom.
Dr. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s long-standing approach of independently addressing its security challenges, which aligns with its broader strategic outlook. Reflecting on today’s turbulent geopolitical landscape, he said India is navigating global instability with calm and clarity. He also underscored the increasing importance of cooperation among nations, regions, and alliances to maintain global stability.
Commenting on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Minister expressed concern over its global ramifications, particularly the disruption of energy markets and food supply chains. He highlighted that India, too, has faced incursions from neighbouring countries and noted that Europe had often responded with detachment and cynicism. According to him, proximity to conflict naturally shapes nations’ perspectives, and diplomacy must acknowledge these differing viewpoints rather than expect uniform responses.
Dr. Jaishankar also called on Europe to adopt a more pragmatic worldview, become strategically self-reliant, and embrace a multipolar order. A key priority, he added, is the acceleration of negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union.
