The Odisha government has launched a large-scale operation aimed at identifying and deporting illegal Bangladeshi immigrants residing unlawfully across the state. This initiative, described as “firm and non-negotiable,” represents a significant step in the state’s efforts to safeguard internal security and ensure demographic clarity.
Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan officially announced the initiative, stressing that no foreign national without proper documentation will be permitted to stay in Odisha. “The government has adopted a strict stance. The identification process is already underway and will be meticulously carried out in every district,” he stated while addressing the media. Minister Harichandan further revealed that preliminary consultations have already taken place with engineering departments and administrative bodies to facilitate the identification process.
“We have engaged in discussions with engineering departments to ensure that no Bangladeshi nationals are being employed. Agencies have been instructed not to assign work to such individuals. The identification drive will commence shortly and will be conducted statewide,” the Minister added while speaking to reporters. He also noted that engineering agencies operating in the state will be required to submit detailed reports on any Bangladeshi nationals currently employed with them.
The Special Task Force (STF) of the Odisha Crime Branch has been designated as the nodal agency to lead and coordinate the operation. The STF is collaborating closely with district-level administration, coastal security forces, and other enforcement bodies to ensure a comprehensive and efficient verification drive. Coastal districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, and Ganjam have been identified as hotspots where illegal Bangladeshi settlements have significantly increased in recent years.
District Collectors, local administrative heads, and coastal protection agencies have been directed to fully cooperate with the STF. They are required to provide necessary manpower and logistical support to ensure the timely execution of the verification and deportation procedures. This crackdown is part of a broader national concern regarding undocumented foreign nationals residing in various Indian states. Odisha’s action aligns with the country’s larger security strategy aimed at curbing illegal immigration and enforcing the Foreigners Act and other relevant legal provisions.
STF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Pinak Mishra confirmed that preparations are underway. Mishra highlighted Odisha’s geographical vulnerabilities. “Given that Odisha shares a border with West Bengal, which in turn shares a boundary with Bangladesh, the possibility of infiltration—whether via waterways or roads—is significant. We are maintaining heightened vigilance across entry points,” he said.
Officials also emphasised that allowing illegal immigrants to reside in the state not only violates national laws but could also disrupt social harmony and pose potential threats to internal security. The government aims to complete the identification drive promptly and initiate deportation proceedings as per the law.
By taking this decisive action, the Odisha government seeks to ensure that the state does not become a haven for undocumented immigrants and reaffirms its commitment to national security, lawful governance, and the protection of its demographic integrity.
