Bijapur: In a significant development reported from Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, more than 15 Maoists were killed in an ongoing encounter near Keregutta Hills, police said on May 7.

According to preliminary reports, the encounter is still underway in Bijapur district along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border under ‘Mission Sankalp’.

Notably a major operation, involving separate units of the state police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is being carried out near the Karregutta hills along the Telangana border.

The operation was launched after the police received credible intelligence related to the presence of several top Maoist cadres in the aforementioned locality.

A total of four bodies of Maoists have been so far recovered in the ongoing operation launched with an aim to free the Karregutta hills, a long held bastion of the outlawed CPI-Maoist along the Telangana border.

It is being speculated that several top Maoist leaders including the likes of Central Committee member Madavi Hidma and Barse Deva have taken shelter in the deep forested zone of Karregutta.

Earlier Security forces on May 6 recovered body of a female Maoist following an intense exchange of fire between a joint team of security forces and the Maoists in Bijapur district.

The gunfight broke out in the wee hours of Tuesday after which the team recovered body of a female cadre of the outlawed Maoist group in uniform. The security team has also recovered a 303 rifle from the site of the encounter.

The exchange of fire took place along the Telangana border in Bijapur district. Several other Maoists are also likely to have been killed or sustained injuries during the gun battle, said the police in an official statement.

It is worth mentioning here that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has earlier announced that the Union Government is committed to eradicate the Maoist-insurgency from the country before March next year.
