New Delhi: The News Broadcasters & Digital Association (NBDA), a prominent body representing news and current affairs channels in India, has issued a significant advisory to its member organisations, effectively prohibiting them from inviting commentators and panellists from Pakistan who are known to propagate anti-India views. This directive comes in the wake of the recent terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam and follows concerns raised by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting regarding the dissemination of “false propaganda against India” on Indian news platforms.

The advisory, a purported copy of which has been circulated on social media, explicitly references the Pahalgam attack as the immediate trigger for this decision. The NBDA, in its communication to editors of member channels, highlighted the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting’s apprehension about the presence of Pakistani commentators who allegedly use Indian news platforms to spread misinformation and undermine the nation’s interests.

“In view of the recent attack on tourists in Pahalgam, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has drawn our attention to channels inviting anti-India commentators from Pakistan in their programme(s) who propagate false propaganda against India,” the NBDA stated in its advisory.

The NBDA plays a crucial role in addressing ethical, operational, regulatory, technical, and legal matters that impact news and current affairs broadcasting in India. Through this advisory, the association is urging media houses to exercise greater caution and responsibility in their editorial choices, particularly concerning the selection of panelists for discussions and debates.

The directive specifically advises editors of NBDA-affiliated news channels to “refrain from inviting panelists, speakers, and commentators from Pakistan in their programme(s), who are known for espousing views that undermine the sovereignty, integrity, and security of the nation and speak against our country.” This broad categorization suggests that news channels are expected to conduct due diligence on potential Pakistani guests to ensure their views align with the national interest and do not contribute to anti-India narratives.

Furthermore, the NBDA has emphasized the need for editors to exercise “a high level of editorial discretion and judgment” in all programming decisions. The association stressed the importance of ensuring that news channels and their digital platforms are not inadvertently misused as vehicles for anti-India propaganda originating from across the border.

To ensure strict adherence to this advisory, the NBDA has confirmed that the directive has been circulated to all relevant editorial personnel within its member organizations. This move underscores the seriousness with which the association and the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting are treating the issue of anti-India commentary finding space on Indian news channels, especially in the sensitive aftermath of a terror attack.

This decision by the NBDA is a direct consequence of the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The attack has spurred India to adopt various diplomatic and strategic measures aimed at countering terrorism emanating from its neighbor. The move to restrict the presence of Pakistani commentators known for their anti-India stance on Indian news channels can be seen as another step in this direction, aimed at curbing the potential spread of narratives that could be detrimental to India’s national security and public discourse.

The advisory reflects a growing concern within the Indian establishment about the influence of foreign commentators, particularly from Pakistan, who may exploit media platforms to disseminate biased or factually incorrect information, especially during times of crisis. By proactively addressing this issue, the NBDA is signaling a commitment to ensuring that Indian news channels prioritize national interests and do not provide a platform for voices that actively work against the country’s sovereignty and integrity. The effectiveness of this advisory will depend on the strict implementation by member news channels and the level of editorial vigilance exercised in their programming decisions.
