On the occasion of Basava Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to 12th-century philosopher and social reformer Jagadguru Basaveshwara, highlighting his timeless vision and dedication to uplifting the marginalised. “On the auspicious occasion of Basava Jayanti, we remember the profound wisdom of Jagadguru Basaveshwara. His vision for society and his tireless efforts to uplift the marginalised continue to guide us,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

The Prime Minister also shared a video montage featuring clips of him honouring Basaveshwara in various settings, accompanied by a reverent voiceover. Notably, in 2015, PM Modi had unveiled a statue of Basavanna in London, symbolising the global relevance of his teachings.

Basavanna, also known as Basava, was a prominent statesman, philosopher, and poet who led the Bhakti movement in Karnataka with a focus on Shiva worship. He founded the Lingayat tradition and is remembered for his revolutionary ideas that challenged caste hierarchies, gender discrimination, and ritualistic practices. Through his “Vachanaas” (poetic verses), he preached social equality, devotion, and rational thought.

He introduced the concept of Anubhava Mantapa, a democratic forum where individuals from all walks of life—regardless of caste or gender—could engage in open spiritual and social dialogue. Basaveshwara also propagated the use of the Ishtalinga, a personal emblem of Shiva, promoting the idea that divinity lies within all.

An early biography of his life, Basavarajadevara Ragale by poet Harihara, remains a key text in Kannada literature.
