When history is written about the political and ideological shifts at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the 2025 Students’ Union elections will be remembered as a landmark moment — a moment when the saffron tide breached the so-called “red bastion,” and a new nationalist dawn illuminated the campus corridors that had long echoed with Leftist slogans.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student organization rooted in the ideals of cultural nationalism, democratic activism, and academic excellence, has not just performed impressively in the JNUSU 2025 elections — it has rewritten the very narrative of the university’s political landscape.
Historic Triumph: Beyond Numbers, a New Era
After a grueling and closely fought electoral battle, ABVP clinched a spectacular victory by securing the Joint Secretary position through its candidate Vaibhav Meena, defeating the AISA-DSF combine with a comfortable margin of 88 votes. More significantly, ABVP captured 24 out of the total 42 councillor seats, thereby securing more than 50 per cent
representation in the Students’ Union — a feat unparalleled in the history of nationalist student movements at JNU.
This achievement was not merely an electoral victory; it symbolized the emergence of a new JNU — a JNU that aspires to align education with nation-building, cultural identity, and academic seriousness.
While ABVP secured the Joint Secretary post, it also fought fiercely for the positions of President, Vice President, and General Secretary. Despite narrow margins of defeat — trailing by just 271 votes in President, 36 votes in Vice President, and 115 votes in General Secretary — ABVP demonstrated its growing mass support and credibility within the student body.
The journey from challenging Left dominance to practically equalling and surpassing it in terms of councillor strength reflects not only ABVP’s organizational commitment but also a deep ideological shift among students.
Vaibhav Meena: A Symbol of Aspirational India
The election of Vaibhav Meena as the Joint Secretary is in itself a story of inspiration. Hailing from a tribal farming family in Karauli, Rajasthan, Vaibhav embodies the spirit of rural aspiration, academic excellence, and nationalist consciousness.
An alumnus of Rajasthan University and Banaras Hindu University (BHU), and currently pursuing research in Hindi Literature at JNU’s Centre of Indian Languages, Vaibhav carries with him a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and an impressive record of grassroots service through the National Service Scheme (NSS).
As President of the Kaveri Hostel, he has worked tirelessly to build a campus culture focused on dialogue, inclusivity, and academic vibrancy. His victory, as he rightfully stated, is not a personal achievement but a triumph of tribal consciousness and the nationalist spirit that has long been suppressed in elite academic spaces.
Breaking the Red Bastions: From 1996 to 2025
This moment is also a culmination of a three-decade-long journey for ABVP in JNU.
Dr. Govind Mishra, who was then a PhD student at JNU and had won the Vice President post (1996) in JNUSU from ABVP, fondly recalled his golden memories from 1996 while sharing his blessings and congratulations. He reminisced how, in 1996, ABVP had made its first major breakthrough at JNU, winning three key central panel positions and securing more than 50% of the councillor seats, thereby establishing a dominant presence in the Union for the first time. Newspaper headlines of that time vividly captured the moment: “Saffron Brigade Storms into Red Bastion” and “विद्यार्थी परिषद ने तीन सीटें जीतकर सनसनी फैलाई”. That breach of 1996 has now, in 2025, matured into a complete ideological conquest, marking a historic evolution from a significant breakthrough of the past to a commanding and enduring dominance in JNU’s political landscape.
From winning three seats in 1996 and 14 seats of councilor to securing 24 councillor seats and the central panel Joint Secretary position in 2025 — ABVP’s rise reflects the organic evolution of nationalist ideology among JNU’s vibrant student community.
In fact, a major milestone in this journey came when Sandeep Mahapatra from ABVP won the JNUSU President post in the year 2000–2001, marking the first time a nationalist voice had captured the highest student office at JNU. This historic victory energized generations of nationalist students and laid a strong foundation for the broader ideological shift that would eventually culminate in the 2025 resurgence.
Another significant breakthrough occurred when Saurabh Sharma from ABVP won the Joint Secretary post in JNUSU 2015, reasserting ABVP’s presence in the central panel after a long gap and reigniting the nationalist spirit on the campus.
Focus on Real Issues: प्रवेश, परीक्षा, परिणाम, परिसर और पाठ्यक्रम
At a time when political discourse often gets clouded by slogans and ideological rigidity, ABVP’s focus remains refreshingly rooted in students’ core issues — प्रवेश (Admissions), परीक्षा (Examinations), परिणाम (Results), परिसर (Campus Environment), and पाठ्यक्रम (Curriculum).
This results-oriented approach has resonated strongly with the student body, weary of the disruptions and politicization that have historically plagued JNU. Students now increasingly demand accountable governance, timely results, clean and safe campuses, and academically rich and future-ready curricula — and ABVP has positioned itself as the only credible force to deliver these aspirations.
Vaibhav Meena and the newly strengthened ABVP councillor team have pledged to work on these focus areas with full transparency, dedication, and participatory leadership, ensuring that the university becomes a true temple of learning, dialogue, and national service.
Strategic Victories in Leftist Strongholds
The 2025 elections also saw ABVP making strategic gains in schools traditionally dominated by Left forces:
School of Social Sciences (SSS):
ABVP won 2 out of 5 seats — a massive breach after 25 years, challenging the citadel of Left ideology.
School of International Studies (SIS):
ABVP secured 2 out of 5 seats, a sharp improvement over its previous performance in 2019 where it had just 1 seat.
Clean Sweeps
In several schools such as Engineering (4/4), Sanskrit and Indic Studies (3/3), and Amalgamated Centers (2/2), ABVP achieved clean sweeps, sending a clear message that nationalist ideas are thriving across disciplines.
Unopposed victories in prestigious centres like the School of Biotechnology and School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies further cement ABVP’s widespread acceptance.
Voices of a New JNU
Speaking after the historic victory, Rajeshwar Kant Dubey, President of ABVP JNU Unit, declared,
“This victory is proof of students’ growing faith in nationalist ideology and their desire to reclaim education as a tool for nation-building. This is a democratic revolution against years of one-sided ideological tyranny.”
Echoing the spirit, Vaibhav Meena expresses,
“Our victory represents not individuals, but the suppressed voices of tribal, rural, and nationalist students who believe in cultural identity and democratic values. We shall foster an environment of respect, opportunity, and national commitment for every student.”
Their words resonate with the hope that JNU can and will transform into a hub of academic excellence, cultural pride, and democratic dialogue, rather than a playground for ideological extremism.
