The J&K Legislative Assembly convened a special session on April 28 to vehemently condemn the recent terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 individuals. Members across party lines united in their denunciation of the April 22nd atrocity, observing a solemn two-minute silence to pay homage to the victims and express solidarity with their bereaved families.

The session was marked by a resolution moved by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, which unequivocally condemned the “barbaric and inhumane attack perpetrated on innocent civilians.” The resolution underscored that the attack was not only a tragedy but also an assault on the core values of “Kashmiriyat,” the Constitution of India, and the long-cherished spirit of unity, peace, and harmony that the region strives to uphold.

In a powerful display of collective grief and resolve, the assembly members offered their deepest condolences to those affected by the heinous act. The resolution specifically recognized the bravery and sacrifice of Shaheed Syed Adil Hussain Shah, who tragically lost his life while attempting to protect tourists during the attack, highlighting his selfless act of courage in the face of terror.

Furthermore, the resolution acknowledged the remarkable unity and resilience demonstrated by the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the immediate aftermath of the attack. It lauded their unwavering support for the victims and their families, emphasizing the strength of the community in the face of adversity.

A significant aspect of the assembly’s resolution was its strong endorsement of the diplomatic measures announced by the Union government on April 23, following a crucial meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). This endorsement signals a unified front between the state legislature and the union government in their approach to addressing the security implications and international ramifications of the terror attack.

The resolution also addressed the underlying motives behind the attack, explicitly recognizing the “sinister design behind the selective targeting of the victims.” In a crucial appeal to all sections of society, particularly the media, the assembly urged restraint and responsibility, cautioning against falling victim to divisive narratives that could inflame passions and further the aims of the perpetrators. The resolution stressed the paramount importance of maintaining unity in the face of attempts to sow discord and division within the region.
