The terrorists identified and targeted innocent tourists based on their religion and launched a brutal attack. In this merciless act, several members of a particular community were killed in cold blood.
In my view, this incident was not merely about the loss of lives. It was, in essence, an attack on India’s socio-cultural unity, its spirit of tolerance, and its cherished ideal of “unity in diversity.” When terrorists ask about a person’s religion before taking their life, they are not just killing individuals—they are striking at the very core of India’s inclusive culture and democratic values.
It is natural to ask—was this attack a coincidence or a well-orchestrated conspiracy? Today’s terrorism is no longer limited to political or territorial ambitions. It has begun to operate under the guise of religion, aiming to fragment society. This is a sign of ideological terrorism—one that fears India’s syncretic culture, its shared civilizational heritage, and its secular ethos.
The long-term effects of such incidents are equally alarming. The Kashmir Valley, heavily dependent on tourism, stands to suffer the most from such violence. Incidents like the one in Pahalgam can instil fear and insecurity in the minds of domestic and international tourists alike. This would not only impact the tourism industry but also disrupt local employment, economic activity, and the overall pace of development. It is deeply unfortunate for the millions of Kashmiris who aspire to live in peace, with dignity and a stable livelihood.
Now is the time for all sections of society—political parties, religious leaders, and the intellectual community—to unanimously condemn such acts and show unity. The government and security agencies must also ensure that terrorists are punished in a way that prevents the recurrence of such incidents. A clear and firm message must be sent: terrorism has no religion, no caste, and no community represents its ideology.
This incident is not just a heartbreaking tragedy—it is a warning against the poisonous mindset that seeks to fracture India from within through religious division, hindering its development and progress. In such times, Indians must become more alert, united, and empathetic.
