Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam has been arrested by Nagaon Police following a series of First Information Reports (FIRs) lodged across Assam over his controversial remarks regarding the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

Islam, the legislator from Dhing constituency, stirred controversy after publicly alleging that the Pahalgam attack was part of a larger conspiracy orchestrated by the central government. He further accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of engineering such incidents for political gain.

Speaking in a panchayat election rally, Islam questioned the narrative surrounding the attack, claiming there was no evidence that terrorists were selectively targeting individuals based on religion. “BJP leaders claimed that the victims were killed after being identified by religion. This is not true. The terrorists opened fire from the forest, and the victims were not identified beforehand,” he said.

Drawing parallels with the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, Islam alleged, “Just like I said six years ago that the Pulwama attack was a conspiracy to help Modi and Shah win the general elections, I believe the Pahalgam attack is also part of a political plot by the central government.” He accused the BJP of attempting to polarize Hindu-Muslim sentiments ahead of the elections.

His statements sparked widespread outrage, with several FIRs filed across various districts in Assam. In response, Nagaon Police arrested Islam from his residence in the Dhing area on Thursday afternoon. “A case has been registered based on multiple complaints received from different parts of the state. We have initiated a preliminary investigation,” a senior Nagaon police official said.

The legislator has been booked under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for making anti-national and inflammatory statements. As the investigation continues, authorities have assured that strict legal action will be taken as per the findings.

Islam’s arrest comes amid heightened sensitivity across the country following the Pahalgam attack, which claimed the lives of 28 people and left many others injured, making it one of the deadliest in recent years.
