Uttar Pradesh: Major train sabotage bid foiled near Lucknow, Kashi Vishwanath express driver averts Garib Rath disaster

A major conspiracy to derail the Garib Rath Express was foiled on April 16 night, thanks to the alertness and bravery of the driver of the Kashi Vishwanath Express. The incident occurred between Dilawar Nagar and Rahimabad stations near Lucknow, where a 2.5-foot-long wooden log—deliberately placed and concealed with tree branches and a cloth—was discovered on the railway track.

At around 2:43 am, the 05577 Saharsa-Anand Vihar Garib Rath train struck a wooden block while approaching from Lucknow. The train driver promptly alerted Rahimabad Station Master Om Prakash, who directed Rajesh Ranjan to inspect the site. On arrival, Ranjan discovered a 2.5-foot-long, 6-inch-thick dry wooden log along with green tree branches deliberately placed between the up-line tracks near pole number 11099/11.

The quick-thinking driver of the Kashi Vishwanath Express spotted the obstruction just in time and immediately reported it to higher authorities, preventing a catastrophic derailment of the oncoming Garib Rath Express. The train was promptly halted at Malihabad station, ensuring the safety of hundreds of passengers onboard.

What’s particularly alarming is the method used to camouflage the log. Authorities discovered that the wooden piece had been carefully hidden using mango tree branches and a cloth, indicating clear intent to cause harm while avoiding early detection. Adding a disturbing layer to the incident, a ‘gamcha’ (traditional cloth towel) bearing the sacred inscription of ‘Ram Naam’ was also found at the site—raising fears that this might have been a calculated attempt to frame a particular community.

This tactic, reminiscent of previous terror incidents such as the 26/11 Mumbai attacks—where terrorist Ajmal Kasab attempted to disguise his identity to falsely implicate Hindus—has raised red flags among law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Initial investigation points toward a premeditated attempt not only to derail the train but also to mislead the narrative around the act.

RPF Inspector Hukum Singh, along with Rajesh Ranjan, filed a case against unknown persons at the Rahimabad police station.

“The timing, location, and the manner in which the obstruction was placed suggest a deliberate plan to cause mass casualties,” said a senior police official investigating the matter. “We have initiated a full-scale probe and are treating this as a high-priority sabotage attempt.”

Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) teams have cordoned off the area and are scanning CCTV footage from nearby villages and stations. Forensic teams have collected evidence from the site, including the cloth with religious inscriptions, which is being analyzed for fingerprints and DNA traces.

Authorities have stepped up patrols and surveillance along vulnerable stretches of tracks in Uttar Pradesh and other sensitive zones.
