The Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the passing of Padma Shri awardee, social worker, and environmentalist Daripalli Ramaiah, fondly known as Vanajeevi Ramaiah. PM hailed him as a champion of sustainability, who devoted his life to planting and protecting lakhs of trees.

He wrote in a post on X:

“Daripalli Ramaiah Garu will be remembered as a champion of sustainability. He devoted his life to planting and protecting lakhs of trees. His tireless efforts reflected a deep love for nature and care for future generations. His work will keep motivating our youth in their quest to build a greener planet. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”

Renowned environmentalist Ramaiah, awarded the Padma Shri in 2017 for increasing green cover, passed away on April 12 after a prolonged illness. A native of Reddypally in Khammam district, he was 87.

Known for his relentless afforestation efforts, Ramaiah is estimated to have planted over one crore saplings across the region. For over 50 years, he championed social forestry, often carrying seeds in his pocket to plant wherever he found barren land.

Highlighting the environmentalist’s role in preservation by Ramaiah, who planted over 1 crore saplings, Union Minister G Kishan Reddy posted on X, “Ramaiah planted over 1 crore saplings and was at the forefront of protecting & furthering nature & environment. His dedication and contribution towards the same will continue to inspire.”

Earlier, Telengana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy also condoled the demise of the awardee, Daripalli Ramaiah saying that Vanajeevi strongly believed that mankind’s survival is impossible without nature and the environment.

According to a statement released by his office, the CM said, “Ramaiah launched plantation as an individual and influenced the entire society. The Padma Shri awardee inspired the youth by dedicating his entire life to environmental protection. ”

Andhra Pradesh CM N. Chandrababu Naidu paid tribute to environmentalist Ramaiah on X, stating:

“Ramaiah’s effort of planting one crore saplings for environmental protection is inspiring. Ramaiah is a role model for today’s generation. His death is an irreparable loss to the environmental protection movement.”

Vanajeevi Ramaiah also received the Seva Award in 1995, the Vanamitra Award in 2005, and the National Innovations and Outstanding Traditional Knowledge Award in 2015.

After Telangana’s formation, Ramaiah received support through flagship initiatives like the ‘Telangana Ku Haritha Haram’, launched by the previous Chief Minister KCR to raise the state’s green cover from 24% to 33%.
