Guwahati: In a big crackdown on narcotics smuggling, the Assam Police seized heroin worth approximately Rs 4 crore from a bus parked at the Interstate Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Guwahati on Saturday.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, law enforcement officials intercepted a bus (registration number AR 11 B 8912) that had arrived from Aizawl, Mizoram. During a thorough search operation, authorities recovered 35 packets of heroin weighing 455 grams.

Unlike previous cases where drugs were concealed in soap boxes or other deceptive packaging, this consignment was found *without any elaborate concealment, indicating a shift in smuggling methods. The contraband was allegedly being transported for distribution across ‘Lower Assam’, including Rangia and Hajo.

Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the case including the bus conductor and driver.

– Md Sahabuddin (driver, resident of Nagaon district,  Safiur Rahman, conductor of the bus , from Goalpara district, Jiaur Rahman, smuggler from Barpeta and Uttam Nath, handyman of the bus.

Sources revealed that the accused were promised a substantial sum of money for transporting the drug consignment. The bus and the seized narcotics have been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.

Union home minister lauds anti-drug operations

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce a series of successful drug seizures by central agencies and Assam Police.

In his post, Home Minister Shah stated:  “The Modi govt is mowing down drug cartels with full might. In our vision to build a drug-free Bharat, our agencies launched massive operations strangling drug cartels and seized 30.4 kg of methamphetamine tablets worth ₹24.32 crore while arresting three people in Assam. Our offensives against drugs will continue with ruthless force.”

He also congratulated the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Assam Police, and CRPF for their coordinated efforts in this major breakthrough.

This seizure is part of a larger crackdown on drug trafficking networks in the Northeast, a key transit route for narcotics entering India from Myanmar. Authorities have intensified operations following directives from the central government to eliminate drug smuggling in the region.

Further investigations are underway to uncover the entire supply chain, including possible international links.
