Murshidabad: Protests against the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, escalated into violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on April 11, following the Juma Namaz. A large number of agitators from the Islamists, who are misled to believe that the newly passed Waqf Act 2025 infringes upon their personal rights, clashed with police, pelting stones, setting vehicles ablaze, and disrupting train services.

The unrest began after Friday prayers when demonstrators gathered in thousands to protest against the Waqf Amendment Act, which was passed by Parliament last week and came into effect on April 5 after receiving Presidential assent. The situation took a turn for the worse when protestors in Murshidabad began pelting stones at a police van transporting prisoners.

Denouncing the violence, Amit Malviya, in-charge of BJP’s National Information & Technology Dept. Co-incharge West Bengal and Member National Executive took to X and sttaed, “More than 5,000 Muslims have blocked the railway tracks in Murshidabad. All of this is happening with Mamata Banerjee’s active complicity. How can the state’s assets — and Hindus, who are a minority in the region — be protected when those responsible for their security are the ones unleashing such radical forces upon them?

The disruption caused by the violent protests has severely impacted train services in the region. Authorities have confirmed the cancellation of at least two trains, while another five have been diverted to avoid the affected areas. Passengers on several express trains, including the 15644 Kamakhya–Puri Express, 53434 Barharwa–Azimganj Passenger, 53022 Sahibganj–Azimganj Passenger, 13432 DN Nabadwip Dham Express, and 53027 Azimganj–Malda Town Passenger, have faced significant delays and alterations to their journeys.

Lashing at the Mamata government over its failure to maintain law and order, Malviya said, “While protesting against the Waqf Board, Muslim mobs vandalised a police vehicle at Amtala Chowrasta in South 24 Parganas, Diamond Harbour district. The police stood by helplessly and watched as the armed mob went on a rampage.

The violence quickly spread, with agitators blocking National Highway 12 and targeting police vehicles, some of which were set on fire. The protestors also targeted railway infrastructure, throwing stones at a train stationed at Nimtita station and vandalizing the station property.

Violence in Malda

Not just Murshidabad, in places like Dhulian Municipality, Malancha Farraka, in Malda district — violent mobs are vandalized temples and burnt Hindu homes, all under the guise of protest. There is no communication from the region because the internet has been shut down. Malviya has urged the West Bengal Police to ensure that Hindus are protected.

Muslim appeasement politics is a slippery slope — history has shown us that it never ends well. India has already paid a heavy price when it was divided along religious lines. Leader of opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari hits back at the Mamata government over complete lawlessness in the state. Adhikari has called for the Imposition of Article 355 in large stretches of areas under several Police Stations of Murshidabad, South & North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Malda, Birbhum districts.

During his visit to Malda, where Hindus were subjected to targeted violence, Adhikari assured them of any and every support possible including legal help and arranging better medical facilities for the victims.

Dr Sukanta Majumdar, State BJP President of West Bengal came down heavily on the Mamata government and stated ” Mamata government has turned West Bengal into a lawless, burning mess. The state is no longer ruled by the Constitution — it’s ruled by appeasement, by mobs, and by the politics of fear. In Diamond Harbour’s Amtala Chowrasta, Muslim mobs protesting against Waqf act vandalised a police vehicle in broad daylight. And the @WBPolice ? They stood still, paralyzed, powerless, humiliated.

On the Murshidabad incident, West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose says, “I have been receiving disturbing reports about some people taking law and order into their own hands in certain parts of Bengal. Protest is welcome in a democracy, but not violence…”
