Bengaluru: A shocking murder case has come to light in Bengaluru, where a man has been accused of brutally killing his wife and then attempting to escape with her dismembered body stuffed in a suitcase. The horrifying details of the case, which has garnered significant attention nationwide, reveal a tragic tale of domestic violence and desperation.
The victim, Gowri, originally from Belagavi in Karnataka, was reportedly married to the accused, Rakesh, who hails from Mumbai. The couple had a tumultuous relationship marked by discord, with Gowri’s family, especially her mother and brother, expressing opposition to their marriage. Despite the familial dissent, Gowri and Rakesh got married and lived together, seemingly striving to build their life despite the odds.
Gowri and Rakesh had moved to Bengaluru about a month prior to the incident. Rakesh had recently secured employment as a project manager in a private company and was working from home. Gowri, a graduate in mass communication, had previously worked in a similar capacity but had recently left her job to seek new opportunities.
The couple’s relationship deteriorated over time, primarily due to financial issues and Rakesh’s frustration with Gowri’s job hunt. On March 26, an argument ensued, triggered by Gowri throwing a kitchen knife at Rakesh in a fit of anger after discussing their financial stress. The knife accidentally hit Rakesh, injuring his hand, which ignited his rage. In a brutal twist, Rakesh retaliated against Gowri by stabbing her in the neck with the same knife.
After committing the horrific act, Rakesh did not seem to show remorse but instead tried to conceal his crime. He stuffed Gowri’s body into a suitcase, severing her legs in the process to ensure she fit inside. However, as he attempted to transport the suitcase away from their home, the handle broke, forcing him to leave it behind as he fled the scene in his car.
In a chilling call to Gowri’s brother shortly after the murder, Rakesh claimed, “I have killed your sister,” and instructed him to inform the landlord that Gowri had committed suicide. Following this, Rakesh switched off his mobile phone to avoid detection.
Rakesh’s escape was cut short when he began to feel unwell while en route to Mumbai. He stopped near the Shirwal Police Station and reportedly ingested poison in a desperate attempt to end his life. Local authorities were alerted, and upon arrival, they provided immediate medical assistance, transporting him to a nearby local hospital for treatment.
As the situation unfolded, suspicion quickly converged around Rakesh when details of the murder surfaced. Bengaluru Police Commissioner, Dayanand, and his team launched an investigation, looking to piece together the series of events leading to the murder. A police team was dispatched to Shirwal, where they apprehended Rakesh at the hospital, intending to transport him back to Bengaluru for further questioning.
Police investigations are ongoing, with an emphasis on understanding the specific motivations behind the tragically violent act. Authorities have speculated that Rakesh’s mental state may have deteriorated under stress, compounded by financial troubles and possibly illicit relationships. The nature of their disputes prior to the murder indicates that there were underlying tensions that played a significant role in the tragic events.
Rakesh’s health is being monitored closely at Sassoon Hospital in Pune, where authorities continue to ensure he receives necessary medical attention. Police officials plan to conduct a thorough interrogation once Rakesh is stable enough to be transported back to Bengaluru. “We are awaiting medical clearance to bring the accused back to the city for questioning,” said Commissioner Dayanand.
