The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a massive investment of Rs 4,200 crore to develop the Buddhist Circuit, aiming to promote religious and spiritual tourism in the state. The project focuses on enhancing infrastructure and improving tourist facilities at six key Buddhist sites associated with the life and teachings of Lord Buddha. This initiative is expected to attract both domestic and international pilgrims, giving a major boost to the region’s tourism sector.
The Buddhist Circuit in Uttar Pradesh comprises six prominent pilgrimage sites that hold immense religious and historical significance. These include:
- Sarnath: The place where Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment.
- Kushinagar: The site of Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana (final passing).
- Shravasti: Where Buddha spent 24 rainy seasons and performed miracles.
- Kapilvastu: Buddha’s birthplace and the capital of his father’s kingdom.
- Kaushambi: A town frequently visited by Buddha during his teachings.
- Sankisa: Believed to be the spot where Buddha descended from Tushita Heaven.
These sites attract thousands of pilgrims every year, particularly from countries with large Buddhist populations such as Sri Lanka, Japan, Thailand, Myanmar, and Nepal. The government’s investment aims to modernize and expand infrastructure, making the circuit more accessible and convenient for visitors.
According to Jaiveer Singh, UP’s Tourism and Culture Minister, The project will be carried out in two phases-
- Phase 1: The government will spend Rs 2,220 crore on the development of Sarnath, Kushinagar, Shravasti, and Kapilvastu. This phase will focus on upgrading tourist amenities, improving connectivity, building better accommodation, and enhancing signage and accessibility at these sites
- Phase 2: The remaining sites, Kaushambi and Sankisa, will be developed in the second phase. These locations will also undergo infrastructure improvements and beautification to enhance their appeal to tourists
To implement the project effectively, the Uttar Pradesh government has submitted a Preliminary Project Report (PPR) to the central government. The report states the proposed infrastructure upgrades, financial requirements, and expected outcomes. Once approved, the project is set to create employment opportunities in the region and significantly boost the local economy through increased tourism.
The Buddhist Circuit is already a major attraction for international pilgrims. With the planned investment, Uttar Pradesh aims to position itself as a global hub for Buddhist tourism, similar to the Golden Triangle in India or the Buddhist trail in Southeast Asia.
The project is expected to improve transportation facilities, including better road connectivity, parking spaces, and visitor services. Additionally, eco-friendly amenities and improved landscaping around the sites will enhance the overall visitor experience.
The Rs 4,200 crore investment is not only expected to promote religious tourism but also to preserve and showcase the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Uttar Pradesh, making it a key destination for Buddhist pilgrims worldwide.
