Tamil Nadu: Worsening law and order, ex-police officer killed for exposing Waqf Board encroachments

A chilling case of targeted violence has sent shockwaves through Tamil Nadu. Retired sub-inspector of police, Jahir Hussain, was brutally hacked to death by an unidentified gang near Kaatchi Mandapam in Tirunelveli town on the early morning of March 18. The ill-fated officer was returning home after offering namaz when he was ambushed.

A video message recorded by Hussain before his death has surfaced, in which he expressed fear for his life and accused certain serving police officers of being behind the plot. He explicitly named individuals whom he held responsible for the threats he faced.

Reacting to the shocking murder, Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai strongly condemned the incident. He pointed out that Hussain was actively involved in social causes and exposing Waqf Board encroachments, making him a prime target.

“It is shocking to learn that he was murdered while returning from the mosque after namaz. His efforts in fighting illegal encroachments have cost him his life. Law and order have completely collapsed in Tamil Nadu,” Annamalai stated.

Social media erupted with outrage as another chilling post highlighted the implications of this crime: “A retired police officer, Jahir Hussain, released a video exposing death threats against him, naming those behind the plot, and was later murdered in broad daylight. If a former police officer isn’t safe, what hope does the common public have? Strict action is needed immediately!”

This is chilling & gruesome. A retired police officer Zakir Hussain publish a video msg about the death threats he faces ( naming people ) and later been killed by goons in public.
If a police officer can face this , situation of a public is a concern

Surge in Murders and Criminal Activity

AIADMK IT wing has shared post on social media platform X listing that multiple murders took place in Chennai last month alone. IT accused that this is a serious concern and clear proof of the worsening law and order situation in the state, which has deteriorated beyond irretrievable levels. The police seem preoccupied with matters other than their mandated duties, except when arresting and chasing BJP and Hindutva leaders for their social media posts or preventing them from participating in protests.

The post lists 12 murder cases in Chennai alone to support its claims. On the night of 16 March, a ten-man gang hacked to death two history-sheeters in Kotturpuram due to previous enmity. This was another case of gang warfare, seeking revenge for the deaths of their associates.

On 5 July 2024, Tamil Nadu BSP chief K. Armstrong was attacked.

On 11 March, a 38-year-old history-sheeter facing 18 criminal cases, including four for murder, was chased and hacked to death by a gang in Kancheepuram. The assailants also hurled crude petrol bombs to corner him.

Social activist Jagabar Ali was struck by a tipper lorry while returning from a mosque after prayers in Pudukottai district on 17 January 2025. Initially thought to be an accident, suspicions raised by his wife and environmental activists led to a deeper investigation, which confirmed foul play. He was actively opposing illegal quarries.

Earlier this month, Mayiladuthurai District Magistrate A.P. Maha Bharathi was transferred and placed on a waiting list for blaming a young survivor in a POCSO case.

On 24 February 2025, a three-year-old girl sustained severe injuries after allegedly being sexually assaulted and brutally attacked by a 17-year-old boy near Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district. The accused, who reportedly smashed the child’s head with a stone when she tried to resist, has been arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. In a viral video, the district collector is heard saying at a meeting on the case:

கேடுகெட்ட திமுக ஆட்சியில் பாலியல் வன்கொடுமைகளால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட குழந்தைகளையும் பெண்களையும் தரக்குறைவாகப் பேசும் தைரியம் திமுகவினருக்கும் மாவட்ட ஆட்சியருக்கும் யார் கொடுத்தது?

“If you notice, according to the report I received, the child spat on the boy’s face. That may be the reason. Therefore, we are forced to look at both sides. Both should be considered before drawing conclusions.”

Hitting out at the official, Annamalai stated: “The Mayiladuthurai district collector has claimed that a three-and-a-half-year-old survivor also bears some blame in the horrific sexual assault case. On behalf of BJP Tamil Nadu, we strongly condemn his outrageous remarks. The Chief Minister and ministers have continued to blame survivors and publish their personal details, which is why such speeches by district officials continue.”

DMK’s Close Ties with Criminals?

Concerns over DMK leaders’ connections with criminals have intensified after the resurfacing of Era. Sridharan’s case. Sridharan, a DMK executive committee member, slapped a female police inspector on duty at the Tiruvannamalai temple and later secured bail from the Madras High Court.

Recently, he was seen presenting a birthday gift to Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin, who accepted it with a smile. The gift? A lion statue that roared, saying: “Thalapathy! Long live Thalapathy! Hindi Theriyathu Poda!”

Annamalai, in a scathing post, pointed out the hypocrisy and lawlessness under DMK’s rule: “Sridhar, who slapped a female police constable, was a fugitive before securing bail. Now, he’s seen posing with the Chief Minister after presenting a gift. This is a clear indication that criminals continue to roam freely under DMK’s protection.”

Criminals Running Amok Under DMK Rule?

Adding to the growing list of lawlessness, Dindigul Communist MP Sachithanandam was caught on video freeing an accused criminal from police custody after physically confronting the officers.

In another incident, the newly appointed Dharmapuri district east secretary of the DMK, Dharmaselvan, spoke at a party’s executive meeting. In a viral video, he can be heard saying: “Not even a single officer can stay without listening to what I say. If they disobey, they will not remain here. No one can intervene in this. You can’t change those people just by telling them what you think. I can change them—just by writing a letter. You should understand that, right?

The district collector should listen to what I say. The SP should hear what I say. The entire administration below me will listen to what I say. If they don’t, they will not remain here. I will do this. No officer can act beyond me.

No one can play games with me; if they do, their game will be over. Right! I know what the leader told me. Whether it is an officer or anyone else, he has told me to issue a letter pad. This includes the collector, and I do not want to talk about anything below that level.

How did you handle things before this? Whether it was a BDO office, I want to know everything from A to Z. The union secretary should know. That’s how it works. No one can fool around here. I do not know how the previous officer behaved before, but I will tell him clearly.”

A gang of six youths was arrested for hacking a 28-year-old rowdy to death outside his house in Anna Nagar on the 26th. The gang posted an Instagram reel stating, “Robert mattai 100 per cent (he is 100 per cent dead).” This created ripples.

The slain Chinna Robert was a history-sheeter and had previous enmity with another ganglord, Logu of Ayanpuram, who was also a history-sheeter. Logu had recently been released from prison.

Sexual assault cases occur on a daily basis. These are just a few examples that highlight the worsening law and order situation. Instead of addressing this, Chief Minister Stalin, who holds the Home portfolio, is more focused on diversionary tactics such as Hindi imposition and other trivial matters.

Critics argue that DMK is using “smokescreen politics” to cover up its all-round failure and unfulfilled electoral promises from 2021. The deteriorating law and order situation, rising crimes against women and children, murders for gain and revenge, chain snatching, burglaries, kangaroo courts, and extortions by DMK members and their allies, mainly VCK, have created a sense of lawlessness. Additionally, the declining standards of education and the alarming rise in juvenile delinquency further expose the government’s inability to maintain governance and social stability. Rampant corruption in sand, stone, and mining quarries, along with the TASMAC liquor scam, continues unchecked, making it evident that the administration prioritises its vested interests over public welfare.

To shift focus from these failures, the DMK has been raising a host of diversionary issues. The renaming of Thiruparankundram as Sikhandar Malai, cases against NTK chief Seeman for allegedly making disparaging comments about Periyar, the imaginary delimitation issue, the two-language policy, and the opposition’s alleged Hindi imposition have all been strategically amplified to distract the public. Critics believe that the ruling party sees the writing on the wall and, in a desperate attempt to cling to power, is manufacturing controversies to mislead the people.
