Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker, identified as Shaju, was brutally attacked with a machete and an iron rod in Kerala’s Kannur district, allegedly by two Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPIM) workers and six others. The assault, occurred on March 11 during the Panoor Poyilur Muthappan Madappura festival.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused stopped Shaju and his friends, issuing death threats before launching a violent assault. He was struck on the head with a machete and on the hands with an iron rod, leaving him seriously injured. Police have registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 189(2), 191(2), 191(3), 126(2), 118(1), 109(1), 351, and 190, covering charges of attempted murder, causing injury, unlawful assembly, rioting, and possession of a deadly weapon, among others.

Kannur has long been a hotspot for political violence, with ideological clashes often escalating into fatal encounters.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sangh has strongly condemned the attack, demanding swift action against the perpetrators. Local leaders have accused the ruling Left government of fostering an atmosphere of impunity that emboldens political attacks.
