The grand and spiritually uplifting Mahakumbh 2025 has not only illuminated Hindu culture and traditions across the world but has also set an extraordinary example of humanitarian service. Among the many service initiatives undertaken at this sacred gathering, Netra Kumbh 2025 emerged as a remarkable milestone in eye health improvement, creating a unique record by its conclusion.
Under the leadership of Saksham, a national organisation dedicated to empowering the differently-abled, this great service initiative was made possible with the support of several service-oriented institutions. The event commenced on January 5, 2025, and continued till February 27, 2025, ensuring that thousands received free eye care services.
A visionary initiative born in Ardha Kumbh 2019
The concept of Netra Kumbh took root during the Ardha Kumbh in Prayagraj in 2019. Recognising the growing challenge of eye health in India, where 1.25 crore people suffer from blindness or low vision, with 15 lakh affected due to corneal defects, the initiative aimed to create widespread awareness and facilitate essential eye care services.
Dr. Krishna Gopal, Honourable Sah-Sarkaryavah, played an instrumental role in shaping this vision, ensuring that Netra Kumbh became a regular feature at every Kumbh event. The first edition was a massive success, reaching out to over two lakh people for eye check-ups and distributing free medicines and glasses to 1.55 lakh individuals.
Overcoming Adversities: Netra Kumbh 2021 amidst the Pandemic
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Netra Kumbh continued its noble mission in 2021 during the Ardha Kumbh in Haridwar. Though restrictions limited large-scale infrastructure, eight small eye check-up centers were established. Despite the premature conclusion of the fair, the initiative managed to serve 50,000 devotees, providing free medicines and glasses to 38,000 individuals.
With the divine blessings of Maa Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, Netra Kumbh 2025 exceeded all expectations, serving lakhs of people through various eye care and medical services. The initiative set a unique record with the following achievements:

Beyond Eye Care: A Holistic Health Initiative
Apart from eye health services, several other medical initiatives were successfully carried out at Netra Kumbh 2025:
- Diabetes Screening: Two OPD units operated daily, providing medication and guidance on diet and lifestyle changes.
- Advanced Blood Tests: A state-of-the-art machine provided over 50 types of reports within 10 minutes using blood samples.
- General Health Check-ups: Two OPD units conducted routine medical examinations.
- Oral Cancer Screening: Two OPD units were dedicated to early detection and diagnosis of oral cancer.
- Eye Donation Awareness: Hundreds of people pledged to donate their eyes, demonstrating a strong commitment to helping the visually impaired.
- Smart Technology for the Visually Impaired: AI-based Jyoti Smart Vision Glasses, Smart Canes, and Sarathi Smartphones were distributed to make life easier for visually impaired individuals.
- Cultural Events: Visually impaired individuals organised Sunderkand recitations, bhajan-kirtan, and poetry sessions, adding a spiritual touch to the initiative.
