A celebratory rally marking India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 victory turned violent in Mhow on March 10, after clashes broke out near the Jama Masjid area. The rally, taken out by cricket enthusiasts, came under a stone-pelting attack, leading to retaliatory violence, vandalism, and arson. Several individuals sustained injuries in the ensuing chaos as the Islamists torched vehicles and shops.

According to reports, a large procession of cricket fans was moving through the streets of Mhow, celebrating Team India’s triumph. However, when the rally approached the Jama Masjid area, a group of islamists from the vicinity began hurling stones at them. Panic ensued as participants abandoned their motorcycles and fled for safety.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the sudden attack led to a violent backlash, with clashes erupting between both sides. In the chaos that followed, several vehicles were vandalised, and at least two vehicles and two shops were set on fire by Islamists.

A resident of Mhow, who witnessed the violence unfold, said, “The rally was moving peacefully, but as it passed near the Jama Masjid, a section of islamists started throwing stones. This triggered a reaction, and soon, the situation spiraled out of control. People ran for their lives, and the miscreants torched vehicles and shops.”

As the violence escalated, local authorities responded by deploying heavy police forces from Indore rural and Indore city. Riot control personnel were rushed in to bring the situation under control. Army units stationed in Mhow, being a cantonment town, were on alert, but no additional military deployment was deemed necessary.

Speaking on the matter, Indore Rural Superintendent of Police (SP) Hitika Vasal said, “Tension arose between two groups, leading to stone pelting and arson. The violence was reportedly triggered by an issue over firecrackers during the rally. As of now, we have confirmed reports of three injured persons. The situation is completely under control, and we urge the public not to believe any fake news. Adequate security forces are in place, and we are patrolling the area. The matter will be investigated thoroughly, and those responsible will face strict legal action.”

Indore District Collector Asheesh Singh reassured the public that the situation had been brought under control and urged people to remain calm and not fall for rumors. “Peace has been restored, and there is no trouble anywhere. I appeal to citizens to exercise patience and avoid spreading misinformation. Strict action will be taken against those involved in the violence. The investigation is ongoing,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG, Rural) Nimish Agarwal confirmed that a preliminary inquiry was underway to determine the exact sequence of events and those responsible for the violence.

“A clash broke out during the victory celebration of Team India’s ICC Champions Trophy win. The situation is now stable. We urge everyone not to take the law into their own hands. Our investigation will ensure that all those involved in the violence are held accountable. So far, reports indicate at least four injuries. Further details will emerge as the probe progresses,” DIG Agarwal told the media.
