PM Modi’s US Visit: Maga meets Mega-Finding synergy amidst contrast

PM Narendra Modi’s all-important visit to the U.S. demonstrated Bharat’s assertive role on the global stage. In contrast to Trump’s aggressive nationalism, Modi’s “Make India Great Again” (MIGA) vision is more measured and draws inspiration from Bharat’s righteous governance (Dharma)

On February 13, 2025, at the White House, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while speaking in Hindi, articulated Bharat’s vision for the future. “The people of Bharat are embracing their heritage while advancing development with determination, moving swiftly toward the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047. In the language of America, this is ‘Make India Great Again’–MIGA!,” said PM Modi.

This statement, echoing the rhetoric of Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA), drew immediate global attention. While some interpreted Modi’s words as a nod to Trump’s playbook, the underlying philosophies of their respective visions reveal stark contrasts in approach and intent.

MAGA Doctrine: Manifest Destiny Revisited

Trump’s MAGA agenda is deeply rooted in the historical doctrine of “Manifest Destiny,” a 19th-century belief that the United States was divinely ordained to expand its territory and spread its values of democracy and freedom across North America. This ideology justified the annexation of vast territories, often through force, displacement, and the subjugation of indigenous peoples. Examples include the Louisiana Purchase, annexation of Texas and overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. The Trail of Tears, which saw the forced relocation and deaths of thousands of Native Americans, stands as a grim reminder of the human cost of this expansionist ideology.

Trump’s modern interpretation of Manifest Destiny has manifested in audacious proposals, such as merging Canada with the U.S., acquiring Greenland, seizing control of the Panama Canal, and even renaming the Gulf of Mexico. While these ideas may seem far-fetched, they reflect a broader pattern of transactional and aggressive diplomacy aimed at reasserting American dominance. This approach, rooted in economic nationalism and military might, seeks to reclaim what Trump and his supporters view as America’s “Golden Era” of expansion and prosperity.

Modi’s MIGA Vision

In contrast to Trump’s aggressive nationalism, Modi’s “Make India Great Again” (MIGA) vision is grounded in a more measured and inclusive approach. Drawing inspiration from Bharat’s ancient wisdom, particularly the concept of Rajasuya Yajna from Mahabharat, Modi’s strategy emphasises righteous governance (Dharma), strategic alliances, and sustainable development. The Rajasuya Yajna, a Vedic ritual performed by kings, was not about conquest but about affirming sovereignty through justice, fairness, and the well-being of all citizens.

Modi’s MIGA doctrine reflects this ethos. Rather than pursuing global hegemony or military dominance, Bharat under Modi seeks to strengthen its position through diplomacy, economic reforms, and cultural leadership. Initiatives like Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and active participation in global forums such as the G20 and the United Nations demonstrate Bharat’s commitment to becoming a responsible and influential global player. PM Modi’s emphasis on building strategic partnerships – with the U.S., Japan, Australia, and others – underscores a pragmatic approach to navigating the complexities of international relations.

Strategic Alliance and Mutual Benefit

Modi’s visit highlighted the importance of collaboration between Bharat and the U.S. in areas such as trade, defence and energy. By framing the relationship as a “MEGA partnership,” Modi positioned Bharat not as a rival but as a complementary power, offering economic opportunities and a model of democratic stability. This approach aligns with the principles of the Rajasuya Yajna, where legitimacy is earned through cooperation and mutual respect rather than coercion.

Bharat’s Growth Trajectory

While the U.S. grapples with internal financial, political, and social challenges, Bharat’s steady economic growth, expanding middle class and technological advancements position it as a rising global power. Modi’s reforms aim to make Bharat a hub for manufacturing and innovation, ensuring its relevance in an increasingly interconnected world. This resilience was a key message conveyed to the Trump administration, particularly in discussions about technology transfers and investment.

Bharat’s Rise as a Global Leader

The contrast between MAGA and MIGA lies in their foundational philosophies. While MAGA seeks to reclaim past dominance through aggressive nationalism, MIGA envisions a future rooted in justice, cooperation, and sustainable growth. Modi’s vision is not about overpowering others but about leading by example and creating a model of development that benefits all.

Bharat’s rise is not merely economic or military but also moral and cultural. By drawing on ancient wisdom and modern innovation, Bharat is crafting a path that balances heritage with progress. As the world navigates the challenges of the 21st century, Modi’s MIGA doctrine offers a vision of inclusive prosperity–one that starkly contrasts the divisive and exploitative legacy of  Manifest Destiny.

In this context, Modi’s visit to the U.S. was not just a diplomatic engagement but a statement of Bharat’s evolving role on the global stage. By aligning with the principles of the Rajasuya Yajna, Bharat is poised to emerge as a beacon of stability and justice, demonstrating that true greatness lies not in dominance but in the ability to uplift and unite.
