In a recent RTI revelation, it has come to light that Arvind Kejriwal, the former Chief Minister of Delhi and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has consumed electricity worth a staggering Rs 41.5 lakh over the past two years. This significant expenditure, spanning from October 2022 to October 2024, amounts to approximately Rs 5,700 per day, adding up to more than 5,60,000 units of electricity. The report also highlighted that Kejriwal’s power consumption averaged over 23,000 units per month or 770+ units per day.

This revelation comes at a time when Kejriwal and his party have been under scrutiny for alleged lavish spending, particularly regarding the renovation of his official residence. Accusations surrounding the “Sheesh Mehal” – a luxury-laden residence – further fueled public scepticism about the government’s fiscal transparency, especially considering Kejriwal’s previous image of austerity.
Power Consumption by AAP Ministers
Kejriwal’s energy consumption is not an isolated case. The RTI response also disclosed that other AAP Ministers have similarly high power usage. In total, these Ministers consumed electricity worth Rs 1.15 crores during the same two-year period, adding to the controversy surrounding the party’s practices.
According to RTI response, Education Minister Manish Sisodia’s residence on Mathura Road clocked electricity charges of Rs 14,95,722 for 126,749.75 units from September 26, 2022, to September 30, 2024. General Administration Minister Gopal Rai’s house clocked bills totalling Rs 21,72,700 for 161,883.14 units during the same period, and the Health Minister’s residence at 8, Raj Niwas Marg clocked Rs 10,53,520 for 68,581.46 units.
“Sheesh Mehal” Allegations
Adding to the growing concerns, the AAP government faced severe criticism for the opulence displayed in the renovation of the official residence of Arvind Kejriwal, often referred to as the “Sheesh Mehal.” The lavish transformation reportedly included costly furniture, high-end appliances, and luxurious decor, amounting to millions of rupees. This contradicted Kejriwal’s self-proclaimed image as a leader advocating for frugality and transparent governance.

Citing an RTI report, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala said that the AAP was not for the common man at all.
“Not so AAM (common) after all? As per RTI reply Arvind Kejriwal consumed power worth ₹ 41.51 lakh within a period of 2 years from Oct 2022 to Oct 2024. Approximate bill per day is ₹5,700 for 770+ units per day. Aam Admi consumes about 250-300 units a month! This was the true face of Kejriwal,” he posted on X.

The revelations about Arvind Kejriwal’s and other AAP ministers’ extravagant electricity bills highlight a stark contrast to the party’s claims of championing the common man.
