Imphal: The Central Government has imposed President’s Rule in Manipur following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9, 2025. The decision comes amid a prolonged period of ethnic violence that has gripped the northeastern state since May 2023, claiming over 250 lives and leaving thousands displaced.

The imposition of President’s Rule under Article 356 of the Constitution means that the state’s governance will now be directly administered by the central government until further notice. The crisis in Manipur has been escalating for nearly two years, with continued clashes, arson, and reports of armed violence between ethnic groups. Despite repeated appeals for peace and several security interventions, the situation remains volatile, forcing the central government to take direct control.

With the resignation of the CM, political uncertainty had further paralyzed governance in the state. This promted the Centre to invoke President’s Rule to restore order and ensure the safety of citizens.

Security Measures and Way Forward

Following the announcement, additional paramilitary forces have been deployed across sensitive areas to prevent further violence. The Governor of Manipur, who now acts as the administrative head of the state, has been directed to coordinate efforts with the Union Home Ministry to stabilise the situation.

The imposition of President’s Rule is expected to pave the way for fresh political negotiations in Manipur, possibly leading to early elections once normalcy is restored. Meanwhile, the central government has assured that peace-building efforts will be intensified, with a focus on dialogue among warring communities and rehabilitation of those affected by violence.

The people of Manipur, many of whom have endured widespread displacement, destruction of property, and loss of livelihoods, are now looking towards the Centre’s intervention for a resolution to the prolonged crisis. Whether this move will bring stability or further deepen tensions remains to be seen in the coming weeks.
