Mahakumbh 2025: Kalpvasis bid an emotional adieu, cherish its memories

The sacred Magh Purnima Snan at Mahakumbh 2025 marked the culmination of the month-long Kalpvas, as over one million Kalpvasis bid an emotional farewell to Teerthraj Prayagraj. Following their final holy dip in the Triveni Sangam, these devout pilgrims embarked on their journey home, carrying cherished spiritual memories.

Kalpvas, which began with the Paush Purnima Snan, concluded with the Magh Purnima ritual bath. Having spent the past month immersed in prayer, penance, and meditation, the Kalpvasis completed their spiritual journey with sacred donations and offerings before seeking the blessings of Maa Ganga.

The Mahakumbh fairground, known for its vast spiritual and cultural vibrancy, witnessed the deep devotion of Kalpvasis who engaged in religious discourse and the rituals of the revered Akharas. At dawn on Magh Purnima, devotees took their final dip in the auspicious Brahma Muhurta before concluding their Kalpvas with havan, charity, and various traditional offerings. While scriptures mention 84 types of donations, devotees contributed as per their faith and capacity, with acts such as donating food, clothing, and money performed with reverence.

To ensure an orderly dispersal, the Mahakumbh administration, under the leadership of DIG Mahakumbh Vaibhav Krishna, implemented a strategic exit plan. Vehicles were allowed only after the fairgrounds began clearing, with designated parking zones facilitating a smooth transition for departing devotees.

Prayagraj’s Mahakumbh remains unique among the four Kumbh Mela locations—Prayagraj, Ujjain, Nashik, and Haridwar—as the only site where the tradition of Kalpvas is observed. This year, under the Yogi government, the grand religious event witnessed significant improvements, enhancing the experience for Kalpvasis.

For many, Mahakumbh 2025 was a deeply transformative experience. Ram Achal Mishra from Pratapgarh, attending his 18th Kalpvas, emphasised the spiritual value of saintly discourses and appreciated the improved facilities near the Ganga. Similarly, 76-year-old Shivnath Gahmari from Satna, undertaking his 23rd Kalpvas despite harsh weather, became emotional as he departed, vowing to return for another sacred journey of devotion and enlightenment.
