A wave of communal unrest swept through the Laksar village of Roorkee in Uttarakhand on Sunday, February 9, following the reported disappearance of a 14-year-old Hindu girl on the evening of February 7. The family of the missing girl has accused two individuals, brothers from the Muslim community, of abducting her, sparking protests, violence, and a heavy police response in the area.

The Incident

According to reports, the minor girl went missing on the evening of February 7 while she was in the Laksar village area. Her parents launched a frantic search for her, and a local villager claimed to have witnessed two boys from the Muslim community taking the girl away. Distraught and alarmed, the parents approached the local police station and filed a formal complaint, alleging that their daughter had been kidnapped.

Protests and Escalating Violence

The situation escalated on February 9 when members of Hindu organisations and local residents learned of the incident. A large crowd gathered in the village to protest against the alleged abduction, demanding justice for the girl’s family and the immediate arrest of the accused. Tensions flared as members of the Muslim community also assembled at the scene, reportedly in response to the protests.

What began as a verbal confrontation soon turned violent, with reports of stone-pelting from both sides. According to eyewitnesses and local accounts, individuals from the Muslim community allegedly threw stones at the Hindu protesters, who were chanting slogans and demanding action. The situation deteriorated further as abuses and threats were exchanged between the two groups.

Police Intervention and Lathi Charge

The police were informed of the escalating unrest and arrived at the scene to restore order. However, the situation proved challenging to control, and the police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Stones were reportedly thrown at the police as well, prompting a stronger response to quell the violence. Several individuals from both communities, as well as police personnel, sustained injuries during the clashes. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Hindu protesters expressed frustration over the police’s handling of the situation, questioning the use of force against them and demanding that the authorities prioritise identifying and apprehending the accused.

Meanwhile, the family of the missing girl issued a desperate plea, threatening to set themselves on fire if their daughter was not recovered soon.

Ongoing Investigation and Police Deployment

In response to the gravity of the situation, a massive police force has been deployed in Laksar village to prevent further outbreaks of violence. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to locate the missing girl and track down the two individuals accused of her abduction, who are currently absconding. The police have launched extensive search operations and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the girl’s disappearance.

Community Reactions and Broader Implications

The incident has sparked outrage among Hindu organizations, who have condemned the alleged abduction and accused the police of inaction in the initial stages. On the other hand, members of the Muslim community have denied the allegations and accused the protesters of targeting their community without evidence.

Local leaders and activists have called for restraint and emphasized the need for a fair and impartial investigation. However, the situation remains volatile, with fears that the unrest could spread to other parts of the region if not addressed promptly.

Current Status

As of now, the police are continuing their efforts to locate the missing girl and apprehend the accused. The SIT is working to gather evidence and interview witnesses to piece together the events leading up to the girl’s disappearance.

This incident has once again highlighted the challenges of maintaining peace in regions with a history of communal tensions. Authorities are under pressure to deliver justice swiftly while ensuring that the situation does not spiral further out of control.

Further updates on the investigation and the condition of the injured are awaited as the situation develops.
