In a significant development, BRS Leader RS Praveen Kumar has filed a complaint against Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on 28 January, accusing him of criminal breach of trust over the premature termination of the Formula E Agreement. The case follows concerns that the CM’s actions resulted in a substantial financial loss for the state, including the loss of a potential Rs 55 crore investment and thousands of jobs linked to the project.

In a post shared on ‘X’, RS Praveen Kumar explained his stance, asserting that CM Revanth Reddy violated his oath of office by acting in a manner contrary to constitutional principles. Praveen Kumar emphasized that the CM promised to govern according to the Constitution when he took office on December 6, 2023, yet has reportedly made decisions driven by personal biases.

I have complained against hon’ble chief minister of Telangana, Mr Revanth Reddy for he indulged in criminal breach of trust according section 316 BNS.

“I have complained against hon’ble chief minister of Telangana, Mr Revanth Reddy for he indulged in criminal breach of trust according section 316 BNS. I have argued that he (CM) also violated the oath of office which he took on Dec 6, 2023 where in he promised that he will rule the state as per constitution, not by affection or ill-will. But he is doing the otherwise,” Kumar said in his tweet.

BRS leader also criticized the CM’s decision to end the Formula E project, highlighting the missed opportunity for Telangana to establish itself as a hub for e-mobility, which he claimed would have been a significant contribution to the nation’s development.

In his tweet, Kumar raised a comparison between the Formula E event and the ‘Kite Festival’ held in Telangana on Sankranthi. Both events were government-sponsored initiatives designed to boost the state’s image internationally. “What’s the difference between the ‘Kite Festival’ organised by Dept of Tourism, Govt of Telangana on Sankranthi wherein representatives from 14 countries seems to have participated and the Formula – E Race held in Hyderabad? Both were government-sponsored events aimed to promote the image of capital and the state. How come one becomes right and the other wrong?” he questioned.

Kumar urged the SHO of Narsingi Police Station to investigate the matter thoroughly and fairly, calling for a full inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of the Formula E agreement.

The case:

The Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) registered an FIR against KTR in connection with alleged misuse of ₹55 crore in government funds during the high-profile Formula-E car racing event held in Hyderabad in 2023. Along with KTR, senior IAS officer Arvind Kumar and private company CEO BLN Reddy have also been named in the case. The ACB has alleged that ₹55 crore in government funds were misused under KTR’s direct instructions, with payments to a foreign company made without approvals from the Finance Department, HMDA board, or the state Cabinet, in violation of RBI guidelines. These irregularities  led to charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act (Sections 13(1)A & 13(2)) and the Indian Penal Code (Sections 409 for Criminal Breach of Trust and 120B for Criminal Conspiracy), all of which are non-bailable.

On Jan 15, the Supreme Court dismissed KTR’s quash petition in the Formula E race case, refusing to interfere with the High Court’s decision.

After the Telangana High Court dismissed KTR’s quash petition in the Formula E case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned him for questioning. Originally scheduled for January 7, KTR requested a delay until the court’s decision, and the ED summoned him for January 16. Following seven hours of questioning, KTR criticized the CM for using investigative agencies for political vendetta, claiming the charges were politically motivated. He also dared CM Revanth Reddy to undergo a live lie detector test to prove his allegations.
