The Padma Awards 2025 were announced on Republic Day eve, Saturday, January 25. The award seeks to recognize 'work of distinction' and is given for distinguished and exceptional achievements/service in all fields/disciplines, such as Art, Literature and Education, Sports, Medicine, Social Work, Science and Engineering, Public Affairs, Civil Service and Trade and Industry

NEW DELHI: The Padma Awards continue to celebrate the achievements of remarkable individuals across India, recognizing their significant contributions to society and inspiring future generations to follow in their footsteps.
The Padma Shri award is the fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India after the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, and the Padma Bhushan.

The Padma Shri awardee list includes several names who have made a remarkable impact in their respective fields.

Social Worker and Spiritual Leader – dedicated her life to nari shakti through furthering devotion, self-reliance and skills training in Mathura, over the past 40 years. Her role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement was vital and is still remembered till date.

Among the prominent names listed for this year’s Padma Vibhushan is Osamu Suzuki, the former chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation

Celebrated folk singer Sharda Sinha from and torchbearer of Bihar’s folk music whose voice is synonymous with Chhath Puja geet – titled ‘Bihar Kokila’ for her contribution. to singing in Maithili, Bhojpuri & Magahi (Posthumous). Their legacies continue to inspire many across different fields.

Dr Neerja Bhatla, a Delhi-based gynaecologist

One of the highlights of the Padma Shri recipients is Dr Neerja Bhatla, a Delhi-based gynaecologist who has made significant strides in cervical cancer detection, prevention, and management. Her work in the medical community has been instrumental in advancing women’s health in India.

Cricketer R AShwin, highest wicket taker 

In a remarkable recognition of talent and contribution to sports, recently-retired India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri. Ashwin, known for his exceptional skills and record-setting performances in cricket, he has made a significant impact on the game.

Bhim Singh Bhavesh, a social activist

Another notable awardee is Bhim Singh Bhavesh, a social activist recognized for his relentless efforts over the past 22 years to uplift the Musahar community, one of the country’s most marginalized groups, through his foundation, Nayee Asha. His dedication showcases the impact of grassroots initiatives in fostering social change.

The award also recognizes the rich cultural heritage of India with individuals like P. Datchanamoorthy, a master of the Thavil, a traditional percussion instrument vital to South Indian music.

Gokul Chandra Das: Breaking Stereotypes and Raising the Bar

Gokul Chandra Das, a 57-year-old Dhak player from West Bengal, has shattered the glass ceiling in a traditionally male-dominated field. Not only has he trained 150 women in the art of playing the Dhak, but he has also innovated a lightweight version of the instrument, reducing its weight by 1.5 kg. His exceptional talent has earned him recognition at international platforms, where he has performed alongside Maestros like Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Zakir Hussain.

Sally Holkar: Weaving a Legacy

Sally Holkar, an 82-year-old advocate for Nari Shakti, has devoted her life to revitalizing the dying Maheshwari craft. By founding a Handloom school in Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh, she has given women the opportunity to learn traditional weaving techniques, preserving a 300-year-old legacy. Her selfless efforts have not gone unnoticed, earning her a Padma Shri.

Lakshmipathy Ramasubbaiyer: A Publisher’s Passion

Lakshmipathy Ramasubbaiyer, the publisher of Tamil newspaper Dinamalar, has been awarded the Padma Shri for his outstanding contributions to literature, education, and journalism. Born in America, he was inspired by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar’s legacy and spent five decades revitalizing the weaving legacy of Maheshwar. His dedication to preserving India’s rich cultural heritage is truly commendable.

From the picturesque hills of Noklak, Nagaland, L Hangthing has been awarded the Padma Shri for his unwavering commitment to cultivating non-native fruits for over 30 years. His expertise has not only brought economic prosperity to his region but also promoted sustainable agriculture practices.
