In a significant move to safeguard students’ interests, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has released its updated list of 21 fake universities operating across India in 2025. These institutions, spread across multiple states and union territories, have been found awarding degrees without proper accreditation or authorization. Students are strongly advised to verify the authenticity of any university through the official UGC website before seeking admission to avoid being duped.

Fake universities are institutions that falsely claim to be accredited and authorized to offer degrees. These organizations mislead students by offering certificates and diplomas that hold no academic or professional value. They often use official-sounding names, creating confusion and exploiting the trust of unsuspecting students.

The UGC regularly updates and publishes lists of fake universities to inform and protect students. In its latest release, 21 institutions have been identified as fake and unrecognized. These universities operate illegally, and their degrees are not valid for academic or employment purposes.

Among the fake institutions listed, Uttar Pradesh has four

  • Indian Education Council, Lucknow
  • Mahamaya Technical University, Gautam Buddha Nagar
  • Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University (Open), Aligarh
  • Gandhi Hindi Vidyapeeth, Prayagraj

Students planning to enroll in institutions in Uttar Pradesh are urged to exercise caution and confirm accreditation status.

State-Wise Breakdown of Fake Universities

Delhi Tops the List with 8 Fake Universities

Out of the 21 fake universities identified, Delhi hosts the highest number with eight institutions operating without accreditation. These include:

  • All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences
  • Commercial University Limited, Daryaganj
  • ADR Centric Juridical University
  • Indian Institute of Sciences and Engineering
  • Vishwakarma Open University for Self Employment
  • Spiritual University
  • United Nations University
  • Vocational University

Check Accreditation

  • Visit the official UGC website to verify if the university is recognized.
  • Beware of Misleading Names:
  • Fake universities often adopt names similar to reputed institutions. Cross-check the details carefully.
    Avoid Unapproved Distance Learning Programs:
  • Many fake universities operate online, offering unrecognized degrees under the guise of distance education.

Seek Guidance
Consult career counselors, mentors, or trusted sources for information on legitimate institutions.
Enrolling in fake universities can have devastating consequences for students. Degrees awarded by such institutions are invalid, rendering students ineligible for higher studies, professional licenses, or jobs. The financial and emotional toll on families is equally severe.

The UGC continues to monitor and take action against unauthorized institutions. Students are encouraged to report suspicious universities to the UGC to help curb this issue. Always verify the university’s accreditation and legitimacy through official channels to avoid falling victim to fraudulent practices. Safeguarding one’s education is the first step toward securing a bright future.
