Real story of Indian immigrants: Amidst rising hate speech they are fueling America’s AI boom & economic growth

Recently, a video of far-right commentator Stew Peters and comedian Leonarda Jonie spewing hateful rhetoric against Indian immigrants has drawn widespread condemnation online. In the video, posted by Peters on X with the caption, “This is the culture we’re importing through ‘qualified H1-B visa’ recipients,” he launched into a vile tirade against Indian immigrants, using inflammatory language to demean their contributions and culture. Peters labelled Indians as “cockroaches and parasites,” accusing them of failing to assimilate into American society, while Jonie, laughing along, did little to counter these baseless accusations. Peters went on to mock Indian cultural practices, making grotesque and unfounded claims about hygiene and moral values, including a bizarre remark about Indians brushing their teeth with the same material they use to eat soup.

This rhetoric not only reveals the depth of ignorance and prejudice but also stands in stark contrast to the actual contributions of Indian immigrants to American society. Far from being a liability, Indian professionals, particularly in the tech sector, have emerged as a cornerstone of the U.S. economy. Indian talent has revolutionised industries, driving innovation, economic growth, and global competitiveness. Nowhere is this more evident than in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), where Indian-origin entrepreneurs have been instrumental in building multi-billion-dollar companies that shape the future of technology.

Indian Entrepreneurs Driving Innovation in AI

Indian immigrants have played a pivotal role in transforming the U.S. AI landscape. A recent study revealed that 15 Indian-origin professionals have founded or co-founded 40 per cent of the 25 largest AI companies in the U.S., each valued at over a billion dollars. These enterprises are not only trailblazers in technology but also critical drivers of innovation across diverse sectors, from healthcare and financial services to transportation and human resources. Their success underscores the invaluable contributions of Indian talent to the global economy.

HighRadius: Revolutionising Financial Services

Co-founded by Sashi Narahari, HighRadius is an AI-driven software platform specialising in automating the order-to-cash process for businesses. With over 3,600 employees, the company provides real-time insights into credit management and accounts receivable, helping firms streamline operations. Its 3.1 billion dollars valuation is a testament to its success in transforming financial services with cutting-edge technology.

Uniphore: Pioneering Conversational AI

Founded by Ravi Saraogi and Umesh Sachdev, Uniphore focuses on conversational AI, offering advanced solutions for customer service and voice analytics. Its innovations in speech recognition and natural language processing have positioned it as a leader in enhancing customer experience. The company, with a valuation of 2.5 billion dollars, exemplifies the transformative potential of AI-driven automation.

Eightfold.ai: Redefining Talent Management

Ashutosh Garg and Varun Kacholia co-founded Eightfold.ai, a talent management platform that leverages AI to optimise hiring and employee retention. By analysing career data and predicting job success, the platform revolutionises recruitment processes, making it a critical tool for businesses worldwide. With a valuation of 2.1 billion dollars, Eightfold.ai demonstrates the power of AI in human resource management.

ConcertAI: Transforming Medical Research

Romesh Wadhwani’s ConcertAI utilises AI and data analytics to accelerate medical research and drug discovery. By improving clinical trial efficiency and enabling precision medicine, the company plays a vital role in advancing healthcare. Its 1.9 billion dollar valuation reflects its significant contributions to the pharmaceutical industry.

Defying Stereotypes and Building a Legacy

The achievements of Indian entrepreneurs in the U.S. extend far beyond AI. From Moveworks’ AI-powered HR solutions to Cambridge Mobile Telematics’ innovations in transportation safety, Indian-origin leaders have consistently demonstrated their ability to address complex global challenges with technological solutions. These entrepreneurs embody the very qualities Peters and Jonie attempt to deny: intelligence, adaptability, and a commitment to bettering society.

Broader Contributions

Indian immigrants contribute significantly to the U.S. economy not just as entrepreneurs but also as scientists, doctors, and engineers. They form a critical backbone of innovation and economic growth, making the country more competitive on a global scale. Their success stories dispel the hateful narrative propagated by individuals like Peters, highlighting instead a legacy of achievement and resilience.

The hateful rhetoric against Indian immigrants, as seen in Peters’ video, is not only baseless but also deeply unjust. It ignores the invaluable contributions of Indian professionals who are shaping the U.S. economy and driving global innovation. The achievements of Indian entrepreneurs in the AI sector, among others, stand as a powerful rebuttal to such prejudice, illustrating the critical role immigrants play in building a brighter future. In the face of ignorance and hate, the accomplishments of these individuals serve as a beacon of hope, resilience, and progress, showcasing the profound impact of Indian talent on American society and beyond.
