The Ohio State House and Senate unanimously passed legislation designating October as Hindu Heritage Month. Spearheaded by State Senator Niraj Antani, the first Hindu and Indian American State Senator in Ohio’s history, the bill marks a momentous occasion for Hindus across Ohio and the United States.

“This is a huge win for Hindus across Ohio and the country. Now, every October, we will be able to officially celebrate our Hindu heritage in Ohio,” Senator Antani declared following the passage of the bill. The legislation, initially proposed by Antani in March 2023, was incorporated as an amendment into Ohio House Bill 173 during a late-night session and passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.

As the 1st Hindu and Indian American State Senator in Ohio history, I’m immensely excited to announce that last night the Ohio House and Ohio Senate passed my bill to designate October as Hindu Heritage Month! Ohio, home to a vibrant and diverse Hindu population, will now dedicate October to recognising the contributions of Hindu Americans to the state’s culture, education, and faith. “Ohio is home to millions of unique individuals, each with their background and story,” remarked State Representative Adam Mathews, the House sponsor of the bill. Representing Warren County, home to a large Hindu community in the Cincinnati area, Mathews played a pivotal role in championing the legislation in the House.

The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) celebrated this legislative success, emphasising its importance in fostering greater understanding and appreciation of Hindu culture. “By officially recognising Hindu Heritage Month every year, HB 173 goes a long way in ensuring that the contributions, culture, and traditions of Hindu Americans are better understood and appreciated by the people of Ohio,” stated Samir Kalra, HAF Managing Director.

Senator Antani expressed gratitude to the Hindu advocates in Ohio and across the nation who collaborated on this initiative. “This was the culmination of a lot of work by Hindu advocates, and I was very happy to partner with them to get this passed,” he said.

The bill, which also designates May as Older Ohioans Month, now awaits Governor Mike DeWine’s signature. Should it receive gubernatorial approval, Ohio will set a precedent by becoming the first state to officially recognise Hindu Heritage Month, empowering Hindu communities to celebrate their rich heritage, culture, and contributions annually.
