The Maharashtra Assembly session on December 19 witnessed heated debates and uproar as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made a series of explosive allegations linking the Bharat Jodo movement to organisations previously flagged for questionable activities. The CM’s claims sparked immediate reactions, with opposition leaders dismissing the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.

CM’s Allegations Against Bharat Jodo Yatra

In a pointed statement during the Assembly proceedings, Fadnavis revealed, “A meeting was held in Kathmandu on November 15, 2024. Some individuals associated with Bharat Jodo were present at this meeting. I have all the records to substantiate this claim.” He went on to assert that Bharat Jodo comprises 180 different organisations, out of which 40 had organised programs and distributed pamphlets for the movement during election season.

Fadnavis further alleged that “48 organisations within Bharat Jodo have previously been flagged as frontal organisations. This was confirmed by the then Home Minister RR Patil.”

He cited an earlier disclosure in the Lok Sabha during the UPA government’s tenure. “On February 18, 2014, the Central Government under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh identified 72 such organisations in Parliament, seven of which are directly linked to Bharat Jodo. Additionally, 13 organizations named by the Anti-Naxal Operations team are also associated with this movement,” the CM added.

Historical Context of Allegations

Fadnavis referred to past statements by former Home Minister RR Patil, who had raised concerns about these frontal organisations during his tenure. He also highlighted records from the Anti-Naxal Operations unit, which had identified links between these groups and certain political movements.

By citing these historical instances, the CM emphasised continuity in the scrutiny of these organisations. “The concerns are not new; they have been documented by various government bodies over the years,” he stated.

Opposition’s Rebuttal

Leaders of the opposition, including prominent members of the Congress, swiftly rejected the allegations. Terming them as an attempt to divert attention from pressing state issues, they accused the BJP government of misusing intelligence reports to malign a democratic movement.

Congress leader Nana Patole called the allegations “a desperate attempt to defame Bharat Jodo,” adding, “The CM is trying to create a narrative against us instead of addressing issues like unemployment, inflation, and farmers’ distress.”

The Bharat Jodo Yatra

The Bharat Jodo movement, initiated as a mass outreach program, has drawn significant political attention in recent months. While its leaders position it as a unifying campaign for economic justice and social harmony, critics allege that it has become a platform for controversial alliances.

The CM’s allegations have raised questions about the transparency and affiliations of organisations involved in the Bharat Jodo movement. The opposition’s demand for evidence and a detailed investigation into these claims is likely to intensify in the coming days.
