BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya has alleged that FDL-AP’s objectives and associations are deeply problematic, citing its ties to the George Soros Foundation and its advocacy for Kashmir’s independence as a pathway to regional peace.
This revelation has raised serious questions about the Congress party’s stance on India’s sovereignty, given FDL-AP’s explicit advocacy for the “independence of Kashmir” and its glorification of convicted separatist leaders.
FDL-AP’s Controversial Objectives
At the heart of the controversy lies FDL-AP’s public statement of objectives. The organisation’s rhetoric starkly contrasts with India’s official position on Jammu & Kashmir, as it openly argues for Kashmiri independence as a supposed solution to the longstanding Indo-Pakistani conflict.
In its mission statement, FDL-AP identifies the Kashmir conflict as its primary area of focus, citing its prolonged nature, high death toll, and nuclear implications. The group describes the region’s independence as a “silver bullet” for achieving peace in South Asia, a view that resonates with narratives propagated by Pakistan and other anti-India entities.
The organisation frames the Kashmir issue as a moral and strategic imperative for international attention, portraying Indian sovereignty over the region as the primary obstacle to peace.
Endorsement of Shabbir Shah
FDL-AP’s website describes Shabbir Shah, a Kashmiri separatist leader currently imprisoned for accepting terror funds from Pakistan-based organizations like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), as a “Prisoner of Conscience.” It lauds Shah’s Jammu & Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (JKDFP) as a “non-violent, ecumenical independence movement” that purportedly represents the voices of Kashmiri Muslims, Ladakhi Buddhists, and Jammu Hindus.
This characterization starkly contradicts Shah’s documented history of supporting terrorism. Shah’s financial links to terror outfits and his role in advancing Pakistan-backed separatism in Kashmir have been well-documented. The BJP has questioned why a foundation co-led by Sonia Gandhi would platform and glorify such a controversial figure.
Adding fuel to the controversy are FDL-AP’s financial links to the George Soros Foundation. Soros, a billionaire philanthropist, has been vocal about his desire to see the downfall of India’s democratically elected government. His foundation has often faced allegations of funding groups that promote divisive agendas under the guise of human rights advocacy.
