D Raman, fondly known as Captain S P Kutti, passed away on the morning of November 26 due to age-related issues. Raman, a former Indian Army officer, later worked with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and became a prominent figure in promoting social and religious causes across the state.

He is best known for his significant contributions to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and his role in expanding its network of shakhas (branches) in Tamil Nadu. Every time his wife was transferred to a new location within the state, Raman took the initiative to establish new shakhas, where he worked tirelessly to promote the organization’s values and programs.

Raman’s wife also played a key role in this mission, setting up Rashtriya Sevika Samithis and conducting Hindu religious classes for women and children. His fiery discourses and speeches at the Mandaikadu Bhagavathi Amman Koil inspired many, leaving an enduring legacy of service and devotion among the local community.

D Raman, widely known as Captain S P Kutti, was a multifaceted personality—an author, speaker, and organizer, deeply involved in the Hindu awakening movement. He regularly contributed articles to Vijaya Bharatham and authored books like When Will We See Our Sindhu and Was It to Lose Our Kashmir? Kutti also translated the Bhagavad Gita into Tamil, making the sacred text more accessible to Tamil-speaking devotees.

A passionate orator, he spoke at street corner meetings, temple discourses, and public gatherings across Kanyakumari and Tamil Nadu, sharing his views on Hinduism and social issues. His speeches ignited the hearts of many, earning him a reputation as a versatile and influential figure.

Kutty was a key foot soldier in the Hindu awakening movement during the early 1980s. He actively participated in numerous protests, often facing police lathi charges and imprisonment for his beliefs. He was a close associate of prominent figures like Hindu Munnani founder Rama Gopalan and BJP senior leader L Ganesan.

His interactions with rationalist atheist E.V. Ramaswamy Naicker (Periyar) was notable, especially when he authored a counter-book in response to Veeramani’s interpretation of the Bhagavad Gita. Kutty strongly believed in encouraging his family, especially his wife and children, to serve the nation through Hindutva-based initiatives.

Throughout his life, he remained active in several organisations, including the Tamil Nadu BJP, Hindu Maha Sabha, and Indu Makkal Katchi, playing a crucial role in furthering the cause of Hindu nationalism and cultural revival.

In a heartfelt tweet, Arjun Sampath expressed his condolences, saying, “We had a very good relationship for over 30 years. Whenever I visited Kanyakumari, I made it a point to meet him and discuss various matters. Our condolences to the bereaved family (wife and daughters). We pray that his soul may rest in the shadow of Lord Thiruvadi. He is a hero to whom we offer our heroic salutes.”
