Bhubaneswar: Security forces clashed with Maoists this morning near Jinelguda, within the MV-79 police station area of Malkangiri district. One Maoist was killed in the exchange of fire, and a commando from the District Voluntary Force (DVF) sustained injuries. The injured soldier was promptly admitted to the district hospital in Malkangiri, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Odisha Police Director General (DG) Y. B. Khurania confirmed that the shootout occurred during a search operation in the region. A body was recovered from the site, along with a cache of arms and materials, including a .303 rifle, a country-made rifle, 26 assorted bags, and other items. The operation is ongoing in the area.
The identity of the deceased Maoist remains unknown, and authorities are actively working to establish it.
DG Khurania also noted that security operations along the borders of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh are continuing, with ongoing intelligence sharing among state and regional police forces. These operations are focused on areas suspected of Maoist infiltration.
Today, operations are being conducted at three locations across the state, and the successful engagement in Malkangiri represents a significant achievement. When asked about the number of Maoists involved, the DG remarked that the operation is still in progress, and a full report would be provided once the team returns.
Khurania urged the Maoists to lay down their arms and reintegrate into mainstream society, highlighting the state’s favourable surrender policy for those willing to abandon violence. The Odisha government encourages Maoists to relinquish their weapons and take advantage of this policy.
According to local sources in Malkangiri, some Maoists were attempting to cross the Saberi River from Chhattisgarh into Malkangiri. Acting on this information, security forces initiated a search operation in the area. During the operation, Maoists opened fire on the security personnel, who returned fire, resulting in the death of one Maoist and the injury of one soldier. Following the shootout, the Maoists fled the scene, prompting security forces to intensify their search in the region.
The injured soldier, identified as Dumbur Bar Nayanak, was shot twice in the leg. His condition is reported to be stable, and he is receiving medical treatment in the hospital. Additionally, a significant amount of Maoist materials was recovered from the encounter site.
Malkangiri district is recognised as a hotspot for Maoist activity, with frequent clashes occurring between state forces and rebel groups. This incident is part of a broader governmental initiative to counteract Maoist influence and ensure civilian safety in the affected areas.
Authorities have escalated their efforts through comprehensive operations aimed at dismantling Maoist networks. These initiatives underscore the ongoing volatility in the region and the determination of the authorities to restore order and stability.
