BENGALURU: The Karnataka Congress has found itself at the centre of a storm after sharing a controversial post on its official X account (formerly Twitter) that featured a distorted map of India. The map, which excluded significant areas of the country, including PoJK and Aksai Chin, has drawn widespread backlash from the public and political leaders alike, particularly from the BJP.

The post, intended to showcase Karnataka’s economic growth and achievement under the Congress-led administration, instead ignited a massive debate over national integrity and Congress’s commitment to India’s sovereignty. The image featured alongside Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar displayed a version of the Indian map that omitted key regions, which many have claimed is a major affront to India’s territorial integrity.

The BJP was quick to respond, with party leaders and spokespersons strongly condemning the post. BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari voiced his objections on social media, stating that the Congress party’s depiction of the map aligns with Pakistan’s agenda. He and others argued that the party’s actions reflected a disregard for India’s sovereignty and questioned Congress’s intent, especially given the recent support by the Congress-led INDIA alliance to restore Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Social Media Outrage and Netizens’ Criticism

The incident quickly went viral, and netizens flooded the comments with strong criticism, accusing Congress of disrespecting India’s borders and pushing a divisive agenda. Some users have alleged that the Congress party is downplaying issues of national security and territorial integrity. Many argued that the map was no accident, linking it to Congress’s supposed sympathies with separatist sentiments.

One user posted, “How can a national party make such a blatant error with the country’s map? This is an insult to every Indian who values our sovereignty.” Another wrote, “Is Congress sending a message by omitting PoK and Aksai Chin? This is highly irresponsible.” Several users also pointed out that it is no coincidence that the Congress-led INDIA alliance has been vocal about Article 370, seeing the post as a sign of Congress’s alleged willingness to compromise on critical national issues.

Context of the Controversial Post

The Karnataka Congress’s original post was meant to highlight Karnataka’s impressive economic growth under Congress rule, boasting that the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) had reached a growth rate of 10.2% for 2023-24, higher than the national average of 8.2%. Congress attributed this growth to its guarantee schemes, which, according to the party, directly benefit citizens by increasing their purchasing power. The Congress post claimed that Karnataka was experiencing historic economic progress and credited its governance model. However, this message was overshadowed by the map controversy, which took over the narrative entirely.

Political Reactions and Demands for Clarification

Several BJP leaders have called for an immediate clarification from Congress and demanded an apology for what they term as an insult to India’s sovereignty. The BJP argued that any party that aspires to lead the country must respect its borders and be cautious about national symbols and representations. Many leaders have openly criticized Congress, with calls for Congress to remove the post, issue a formal apology, and explain how such a misrepresentation was allowed on an official account.

Pradeep Bhandari noted, “This incident raises serious questions about the Congress party’s understanding and respect for India’s territorial concerns. This is not a small error—it’s an affront to the nation and our soldiers who have defended these territories.” Some BJP leaders have further alleged that Congress’s decision to share this map reflects a troubling indifference toward national unity and integrity, especially given recent comments from Congress leaders about Article 370.

Yet again Congress runs Pakistan's agenda!

Historical Context and Allegations of Political Agendas

The controversy has also led to a wider debate on Congress’s political alliances and alleged sympathies. Some commentators have drawn parallels between the distorted map and Congress’s alliance with parties that have raised questions on Jammu and Kashmir’s status within India. Political analysts argue that such incidents could be seen as a signal of Congress’s stance on national issues and have encouraged voters to think critically about what these alliances represent.

 Map changed after blacklash

After the blacklash  Karnataka Congress has  changed the map in its X post.  This not the first time a national party did this. Even the party promised  to reintroduce article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir which removed by union BJP government. The BJP leaders alleging the congress goto any extent just to vote bank politics and appeasement policy.

The incident has opened up discussions on the importance of political parties being cautious with national symbols, especially in an era of heightened nationalism and digital scrutiny. With increasing calls for transparency, Congress’s handling of this issue could have lasting implications for its relationship with the public and the electorate’s perception of its commitment to India’s territorial integrity.
