CHENNAI: In a chilling incident that has raised alarm among residents, the decomposed body of a young woman was discovered stuffed inside a suitcase near Salem, Tamil Nadu, on Monday, September 30. Passersby alerted local police to a foul odour emanating from an abandoned suitcase located under a bridge along the Salem-Coimbatore National Highway in Avarangaampalayam.

Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officials opened the suitcase and were confronted with a grim sight: the highly decomposed remains of a woman, her face wrapped in a polythene cover. Authorities suspect foul play, with preliminary indications suggesting she may have been strangled. A post-mortem examination scheduled for October 2 is expected to provide clarity on the cause of death.

Initial reports indicate that the victim was aged between 20 and 30 years old and exhibited unusual physical characteristics, possessing six fingers on each hand. The suitcase itself bore stickers in Hindi, yet any barcodes that might have facilitated identification had been erased, likely to evade police tracking.

In response to the discovery, the Salem police have disseminated alerts to neighboring districts, including Tirupur, Erode, and Coimbatore, seeking information on any recent missing persons cases that could correspond with the unidentified woman.

Local Village Administrative Officer (VAO) Jayakumar, who initially reported the suitcase to the authorities, played a crucial role in alerting the police. A team led by District Superintendent Gautham Goyal, along with DSP S. Raja and police inspectors Karithikeyini, Baby, and Senthilkumar, responded swiftly to the scene.

Investigators theorise that the woman was likely murdered elsewhere before her body was disposed of in the suitcase. The police have registered a case and are exploring multiple angles as part of their investigation. However, it remains unclear whether there are any CCTV cameras in the vicinity of the highway or bridge that could provide further leads.

This discovery comes on the heels of a similar incident earlier this month, where severed body parts of a woman were found in a suitcase in Thoraipakkam. In that case, police successfully apprehended a suspect, identified as Manikandan, from the Sivaganga district.
