‘Her condition is critical; we admitted her’: How RG Kar Hospital’s administration manipulated rape victim’s parents

When the father inquired about the reason for them to come to the hospital, the administration at RG Kar hospital responded, "Your daughter's condition is not good. We are admitting her to the hospital. Can you come immediately?"

Junior doctors and medical students stage protest against the murder of PG trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital

New revelations have surfaced in the harrowing Kolkata rape murder case. Recent information indicates that RG Kar Medical College had informed the trainee doctor’s parents that their daughter had committed suicide. They also claimed that her condition is serious and they have admitted her, asking parents to rush to the hospital.

On the morning of August 9, after the body of the trainee doctor was discovered, the hospital’s assistant superintendent made three urgent phone calls to the parents within half an hour, beginning at 10:53 AM. The audio recordings of these calls have gone viral on social media.

Details of the phone calls

First Call (1 minute 46 seconds):

A woman from RG Kar Hospital called the parents, stating, “I am calling from RG Kar Hospital. Can you come to the hospital immediately?”

When the father inquired about the reason, the response was, “Your daughter’s condition is not good. We are admitting her to the hospital. Can you come immediately?”

Pressing for more information, the father asked, “What happened to my daughter?”

The staff member replied, “When you arrive here, the doctors will explain what happened. Since you are family, we found your number and called you. Please come as soon as possible. Your daughter has been admitted.”

The victim’s mother then asked, “Does she have a fever?”

The staff member replied, “Just come quickly.”

Concerned, the father asked, “Is her condition serious?”

The response was, “Yes, her condition is very serious. Please come quickly.”

Second Call (46 seconds):

Five minutes later, a second call was made to the parents.

The same staff member, now sounding more anxious, said, “Your daughter’s condition is very critical. Please come as quickly as possible.”

When the father asked what had happened, the staff member replied, “The doctors will explain when you get here. Please come quickly.”

Inquiring about the caller’s identity, the father asked, “Who is speaking?”

The staff member responded, “I am the assistant superintendent, not a doctor.”

The father requested to speak with a doctor to address his concerns, but the call was abruptly ended by the staff member.

Third Call (28 seconds):

In the third and final call, the staff member said, “Your daughter may have committed suicide or she may be dead. The police are here. We are at the hospital, and this call is being made in front of everyone. Please come quickly.”

Hospital administration under scrutiny

The changing statements from the hospital have sparked suspicion among the investigating team regarding the potential concealment of the crime. The varying accounts—from a minor condition in the first call to a serious emergency in the second, and finally, to a suicide or death in the third—have led to questions about whether the hospital and police intentionally fabricated the suicide theory.

Initially, at Talla Police Station, the death was recorded as an ‘unnatural death,’ and the parents were informed much later.

A protesting student criticised the hospital administration, questioning, “How could the administration be so manipulative and shameless in informing the victim’s parents about her death, despite knowing the seriousness of the crime?”

Kolkata police response

In response to the viral audio clips, Indira Mukherjee, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Kolkata Police’s Central Division, stated, “We have listened to some audio clips that have been broadcast on several channels. We have repeatedly stated that Kolkata Police has not made any such comments. We never said it was a suicide. These audio clips confirm that.”

On August 12, the police provided the post-mortem report to the trainee doctor’s family. The report revealed that the trainee doctor had been raped and brutally assaulted before being strangled and suffocated. The incident is believed to have occurred between 3 and 5 AM on August 9.

The four-page post-mortem report detailed severe exploitation, including deep wounds on the doctor’s private parts. The attacker had pressed her nose, mouth, and throat to silence her screams, leading to a broken thyroid cartilage. The doctor’s head was slammed against the wall to prevent her from shouting, and she sustained injuries on her abdomen, lips, fingers, and left leg. The violence was so severe that her glasses broke, and glass shards got into her eyes. She had bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts.

Statement of the victim’s father

Six days after the rape murder, a diary belonging to the trainee doctor was discovered, containing personal notes from the victim. The victim’s father shared insights from the diary in an interview.

He said, “My daughter wrote in her diary every day. On the day of her death, she wrote in the diary before going to her night shift at RG Kar Medical College. She was a hardworking girl who studied 10-12 hours daily to achieve her dreams.”

He added that his daughter had expressed her aspiration to become a gold medalist in her MD course in the diary. “Now, we just hope for justice,” he concluded.
