US Presidential Candidate Donald Trump has escalated his ongoing feud with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, threatening severe legal consequences if the tech mogul or anyone else engages in illegal activities during the upcoming 2024 Presidential Election. These statements, revealed in Trump’s forthcoming book Save America, set to release on September 3, add to the growing tension between the former president and big tech companies, particularly in light of their roles in the 2020 election.
Trump’s new book goes beyond merely recounting past grievances; it also serves as a stern warning for the future. He asserts that any attempts to interfere in the 2024 Presidential Election will be met with severe consequences, including lifetime imprisonment. “We are watching him closely, and if he does anything illegal this time, he will spend the rest of his life in prison — as will others who cheat in the 2024 Presidential Election,” Trump declared.
This is not the first time Trump has made such threats. In July, he posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, that “ELECTION FRAUDSTERS” would face unprecedented prison sentences if they were found to be tampering with the election. These statements have been interpreted as direct challenges to both Zuckerberg and other perceived enemies within the tech world.
In the book “Save America”, Trump details his version of events leading up to and following the 2020 election, portraying Zuckerberg as a key player in what he calls a “plot against the president.” Trump recalls multiple meetings with Zuckerberg at the White House, where the tech mogul and his wife, Priscilla Chan, would attend dinners and engage in seemingly cordial conversations. According to Trump, these encounters were part of a deceptive strategy, with Zuckerberg outwardly appearing supportive while covertly working to undermine his re-election efforts.
A focal point of Trump’s allegations is the $420 million donation that Zuckerberg and Chan made to fund election infrastructure during the 2020 race. This contribution, which was distributed to local election offices across the country, was intended to help manage the increased volume of mail-in ballots due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Trump claims that these funds were used to influence the election in favor of Joe Biden, specifically citing the installation of “shameful Lock Boxes” as part of a broader scheme to ensure his defeat.
“Zuckerbucks” and the 2020 Election
The term “Zuckerbucks” has become a rallying cry for conservatives who believe that Zuckerberg’s financial contributions were not merely charitable but rather a calculated move to sway the election. Trump seizes on this narrative in Save America, arguing that Zuckerberg’s actions were part of a larger conspiracy involving big tech and liberal interests to rig the election against him.
“He told me there was nobody like Trump on Facebook,” Trump writes in his book. “But at the same time, and for whatever reason, he steered it against me.” This sentiment reflects a deep-seated belief among Trump and his supporters that Zuckerberg and other tech executives were instrumental in tipping the scales in Biden’s favor, through both overt actions like the donation and covert manipulation of social media algorithms.
These allegations come at a time when Zuckerberg has publicly distanced himself from the 2024 election. Recently, Zuckerberg informed the public that he has no plans to contribute financially to election infrastructure this year, marking a significant departure from his involvement in 2020. He has also emphasised that his previous contributions were not intended to favor any particular candidate or party.
In a letter sent to the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg acknowledged that Meta made a mistake in suppressing a story related to Hunter Biden’s laptop during the 2020 election. At the time, the FBI had warned that the story might be part of a Russian disinformation campaign. Zuckerberg now concedes that the reporting was not Russian disinformation and that Meta should not have demoted it.
Additionally, Zuckerberg disclosed that the Biden administration had pressured Meta to suppress certain COVID-19 content, which he now views as an overreach by the White House. This revelation has provided further ammunition to conservatives, who have long accused Meta and other tech companies of censoring content that does not align with their views.
