In the midst of escalating Hindu-Muslim tensions in Rajasthan, a tragic incident unfolded in Jaipur on August 16, 2024, leading to the death of a Hindu man named Dinesh Swami. The incident has further fueled communal unrest, following a similar violent episode in Udaipur on the same day.

Details of the incident

The incident occurred in the Shastri Nagar area of Jaipur, where Dinesh, accompanied by his friend Jitendra, was riding his scooter when they got into an argument with a group of Muslim youths travelling in an e-rickshaw. The confrontation began over a minor issue of overtaking, but it quickly escalated into violence. Shahrukh Khan, one of the youths in the e-rickshaw, along with his friends, allegedly attacked Dinesh, brutally assaulting him on the road.

Despite the initial altercation ending, Dinesh’s condition deteriorated after he returned home. His family rushed him to Kawatiya Hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The following day, August 17, 2024, the incident sparked outrage at the Shastri Nagar police station, where Dinesh’s family and supporters accused the police of negligence and demanded immediate action against the perpetrators.

Police response and tensions in Jaipur

The police, led by Additional DCP (North) Bajrang Singh, quickly arrested Shahrukh Khan and launched a search for his accomplices. In response to the growing unrest, Section 144 was imposed in the area to prevent further violence. Authorities have also urged the public not to spread rumours, emphasising the need for calm while the investigation continues. A post-mortem examination of Dinesh’s body has been conducted, and further actions will be determined based on the findings.

Udaipur Connection

The Jaipur incident occurred just as Udaipur was reeling from its own communal tensions. Earlier on August 16, 2024, Udaipur witnessed a violent altercation between two students, which led to a Hindu student being stabbed multiple times by another student, allegedly from the Muslim community. The attack, which took place around 10:30 AM in the Surajpol police station area, resulted in the injured student being hospitalised in critical condition.

Communal tensions flare up in #Udaipur:

Outraged by the stabbing, Hindu organisations in Udaipur called for the closure of markets in several parts of the city, including Chetak Circle, Hathipole, Ashwini Market, Bapu Bazaar, and Ghantaghar. The situation quickly escalated, with residents taking to the streets, vandalising property, setting a garage on fire, and overturning vehicles in the Sardarpura area.

In response to the violence, Udaipur Collector and District Magistrate Arvind Poswal imposed Section 144 across the city, instructing the police to strictly enforce the order to prevent further disturbances.

The situation remains volatile, with authorities on high alert to prevent further escalation. The tragic death of Dinesh Swami in Jaipur and the violent unrest in Udaipur are stark reminders of rising tensions in the society and also highlight a static pattern, where the victim is always a Hindu.
