Kolkata: On the morning of August 9, the lifeless body of the young doctor was discovered in a semi-nude state inside a seminar hall at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The 31-year-old, a second-year student specialising in chest medicine, had been on night duty and was last seen on the premises around 2 a.m. Her body was found by an intern who noticed her unresponsive phone and proceeded to the seminar room. The sight that greeted him was harrowing: the doctor’s body was partially covered by a blue bedsheet, with her kurta dishevelled and trousers missing. Nearby, her laptop, notebook, cell phone, and a water bottle were found, adding to the disturbing scene.

Autopsy and Initial Findings

The initial autopsy report revealed the extent of the violence inflicted on the victim. The report indicated signs of sexual assault and a violent struggle. The doctor had sustained numerous injuries, including bleeding from her eyes and mouth, and a broken neck. The presence of blood stains, human hair, and a broken spectacle on the blood-stained mattress where her body was found further corroborated the brutality of the crime.

Breakthrough in the Investigation

The investigation took a pivotal turn when a Bluetooth headset was discovered at the crime scene. Police quickly reviewed CCTV footage from the hospital, which showed Sanjoy Roy, a civic police volunteer, near the seminar hall around the time of the murder. Roy, who was seen leaving the hospital in the early hours of the morning, became a prime suspect. The police seized mobile phones from all suspects and attempted to pair the Bluetooth device with these phones. Shockingly, Roy’s phone connected to the device, leading to his immediate arrest.

During interrogation, Roy initially provided inconsistent statements but eventually confessed to the crime. Authorities are now investigating whether Roy had any accomplices or if others were involved in the murder.

Sanjay Roy, a civic police volunteer, was assigned to assist lower-ranked officers and ensure safety within the hospital. His involvement in this heinous crime has shocked many, revealing a severe breach of trust. Following his arrest, police are focusing on identifying any potential accomplices and verifying Roy’s statements through medical examinations and further questioning.

Reactions from the Medical Fraternity and Politicians

The murder has sparked an outpouring of grief and outrage from the medical community and the public. Junior doctors, interns, and postgraduate trainees at various hospitals in West Bengal have organized protests, demanding justice and improved security measures. At R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, these protests included sit-ins, candle marches, and demonstrations, with participants holding signs that read “Justice for Our Colleague” and “Safety First.”

The incident has also elicited strong reactions from opposition parties. Leaders from the BJP and Congress have criticized the state government, alleging attempts to suppress the truth. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, citing concerns over potential state-level cover-ups. Paul took to X, where she said,” “The gravity of this crime demands an unbiased investigation. We urge for a CBI probe to ensure justice for the victim and transparency in the investigation. #JusticeForDoctor #CBIProbe”

BJP leader Amit Malviya has also accused the state government of attempting to hide the crime. He stated on X, ” he Mamata Banerjee government is allegedly trying to suppress the truth. We need a CBI investigation to ensure justice for the victim. #JusticeForDoctor #Kolkata”

Hospital’s Response and Safety Measures

In the aftermath of the murder, the hospital has established two inquiry panels: one to examine internal administrative lapses and another to oversee the postmortem process. The incident has highlighted significant security concerns within the hospital, leading to calls for improved safety measures. Medical professionals have demanded the installation of additional CCTV cameras, enhanced security personnel, and more secure areas for staff working late hours.

Hospital officials have pledged to review and strengthen their security protocols, acknowledging the need for immediate changes to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Ongoing Protests and Public Sentiment

The outrage has extended beyond the medical community. Students and youth organisations across West Bengal have organized road blockades and rallies, demanding a swift and transparent investigation. The student and youth wings have been actively involved in these protests, further amplifying the call for justice.

The swift identification and arrest of the suspect through the use of a Bluetooth device have brought some resolution, but the incident has also underscored the urgent need for systemic changes to ensure the safety of medical professionals.
