Kochi: In a significant operation against drug trafficking, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Kochi Zonal Unit has successfully destroyed approximately 2,725 kgs of narcotic drugs, including 199.45 kgs of heroin and 2,525.675 kgs of methamphetamine hydrochloride. These drugs were seized in two separate operations, with the heroin confiscated in October 2022 and the methamphetamine in May 2023. Both shipments were reportedly brought into India from Iran, leading to the arrest of seven Iranian nationals in connection with these cases.

The destruction of these dangerous substances was carried out under the supervision of a newly formed High Level Drug Disposal Committee, which includes key officials from the NCB and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. This committee was established to ensure compliance with Supreme Court guidelines regarding the disposal of narcotics before the commencement of legal proceedings.

The initial meeting of the committee recommended the swift disposal of the seized drugs, and after completing the necessary legal procedures, the contraband was incinerated in Ambalamedu, located on the outskirts of Kochi. The operation was overseen by Maneeshkumar, the Deputy Director General of the NCB Southern Zone, along with the Kochi Zonal Director and the Deputy Director of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.

Drug trafficking has emerged as a serious issue in Kerala over the past few years, with the state frequently making headlines for large narcotic seizures. In a related incident in May 2023, the Bharatiya Navy intercepted a mothership off the Kerala coast, seizing around 2,500 kgs of high-grade methamphetamine valued at approximately Rs 15,000 crores. This operation was a collaborative effort between the Navy and the NCB, highlighting the ongoing battle against drug smuggling in the region.

The rise in drug trafficking has been attributed to various factors, including the aftermath of the demonetization policy implemented by the Government of Bharat in November 2016. This policy introduced stringent regulations to control foreign exchange inflow, disrupting funding channels for terrorist organizations. In response, these groups have reportedly shifted to narcotic trafficking and gold smuggling as new revenue sources, with narcotics proving to be particularly lucrative.

While Kerala has been at the forefront of this issue, it is essential to recognize that drug trafficking is a nationwide concern, with similar incidents reported across various states in India. The recent actions by the NCB and other agencies reflect a concerted effort to combat this growing menace and protect communities from the devastating impact of drug abuse.
