NEW DELHI: Tragedy struck in Delhi on the evening of July 27 as heavy rains caused a nearby drain to burst, resulting in the flooding of a coaching centre’s basement in Rajendra Nagar. Sadly, two female students lost their lives in this unfortunate incident, while another student remains missing. The authorities, including the police, fire services, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are currently engaged in a rescue operation to save the remaining students trapped inside the building.

The distressing incident came to light when the Rao IAS Study Centre reported the flooded basement to the authorities at 7 pm. DCP Central M Harshavardhan addressed the media, sharing that they received information about the flooded basement of a UPSC coaching institute in Rajender Nagar, with a possibility of people being trapped inside. The heavy rainfall led to severe waterlogging on the road, exacerbating the situation. The authorities are currently investigating the cause of the rapid flooding and how individuals became trapped in the basement. At the scene, the Delhi Fire Service and NDRF rescue teams are working tirelessly to conduct search and rescue operations. So far, the lifeless body of one female student has been recovered.

Meanwhile, numerous students remain stranded in the basement of the Rao Coaching Centre, an IAS training facility. However, the ongoing rescue operations are being hindered by the low visibility caused by the flooding. To address this challenge, electric motor pumps are being utilised to drain the water from the basement.
