In a historic move, the Ministry of Finance has sanctioned the request of a Hyderabad-based Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer to officially change her name and gender. Ms. M Anusuya, who is currently serving as a Joint Commissioner, will now be recognised as Mr. M Anukathir Surya.
Accotrding to the reports, “Ms. M Anusuya, IRS, presently posted as Joint Commissioner in the office of Chief Commissioner, Customs Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT) Hyderabad, has requested for a change of her name from Ms. M Anusuya to Mr. M Anukathir Surya and gender from female to male.” The order further mentions that the decision was taken with the “approval of the competent authority.”

This transition is noteworthy as it is the first instance of a name and gender change being officially recognized within the Indian Civil Services.
In 2022, the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), University of Law, Hyderabad, demonstrated its support for the LGBTQ+ community by designating the ground floor as a gender-neutral space. Rooms on this floor were allocated to students who self-identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community.

In August 2023, Dr. Ruth Paul John MBBS, was the first trans person to get seat in MD Emergency Medicine in ESI Hospital, Hyderabad.
In July 2023, Telangana govt inaugurated a transgender clinic at Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad.
