Imphal:  Intense gunfire has erupted in Gularthol, Jiribam district of Manipur, following attacks by Kuki-Hmar-Zo terrorists on houses belonging to the Meitei community. The gunfight between Manipur Police Commando and Kuki-Hmar-Zo terrorists took place last night, with heavy firing reported as both sides engaged in a fierce battle. Although the situation remains volatile, no casualties have been reported so far.

Since June 5, Kuki militants have targeted Meitei community villages in the Jiribam district. Jiribam has remained calm during the year-long violence in Manipur. However, following the recent election results, Kuki militant groups began targeting Meitei villages, setting many on fire. The district, which shares a border with Assam, has a mixed population of Naga, Meitei, and Kuki communities. However, the Kuki militants are targeting only the Meitei villages in the district.

The violence has led to the evacuation of thousands of people by security forces, with many currently taking shelter in relief camps. Additionally, over 600 Meitei people have crossed over to Assam, seeking refuge in Cachar district.

This conflict highlights the ongoing tensions and security challenges in the region. In response, search operations and area domination were conducted by security forces in the fringe and vulnerable areas of hill and valley districts. During these operations, several items were recovered, including:

– 2 SBBL Guns

– 1 Carbine with one magazine

– 12 No. 36 Hand Grenades

– 7 Detonators

– 6 Tube launchers

– 10 live ammunition

– 2 smoke hand grenades

– 1 wireless Motorola set with one charger

These items were recovered from the general area of Yangoi in Imphal West District, indicating the extent of the armed conflict and the preparedness of the militant groups.

The situation remains tense as authorities work to restore order and provide aid to the displaced populations. Regular patrols and increased security measures are being implemented to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of the affected communities.

Meanwhile, CM N Biren Singh stated, “Upon their arrival from Delhi, Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi, Security Advisor  Kuldiep Singh, and DGP Rajiv Singh met with me at my office to brief me on the security and administrative measures being implemented to restore peace in Manipur. Under the guidance of  Prime Minister  Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the central government has begun laying out plans to initiate dialogue with all stakeholders.”
