Ayurveda, with its rich collection of natural remedies, offers a wealth of herbs renowned for their skincare benefits. From soothing inflammation to locking in moisture, these herbs have been cherished for centuries for their healing properties. Here’s a look at some of the top moisturising herbs in Ayurveda that can rejuvenate and nourish your skin.

Key herbs for skin care in Ayurveda

Neem:

Neem is celebrated for its medicinal and beauty-enhancing properties, renowned for its antibacterial, antiseptic, and antifungal qualities. It effectively treats skin rashes, redness, inflammation, and itchiness, while its essential fatty acids and vitamin E deeply nourish and moisturise the skin. Neem’s therapeutic benefits extend to promoting internal healing, making it a valuable herb for overall skin health.

Calendula:

Calendula, abundant in carotenoids, serves as a potent moisturiser that effectively alleviates skin concerns like age spots and stretch marks. Its nourishing properties help hydrate the skin deeply, promoting a smoother and more even complexion.

Chamomile:

Chamomile essential oil alleviates skin irritation, acne, and various skin conditions. Chamomile wax effectively diminishes dry spots, restoring a light layer of moisture to the skin’s surface. Chamomile extracts provide long-lasting hydration and soothe the skin, promoting a clearer and more balanced complexion.

Aloe Vera:

Aloe vera acts as a gentle exfoliator, effectively removing dead skin cells and promoting a smoother complexion. It soothes and hydrates the skin, helping to maintain optimal moisture levels without leaving a greasy residue. Aloe vera’s moisturising properties make it suitable for all skin types, offering a lightweight and non-greasy feel while nourishing the skin deeply.

Ashwagandha:

Ashwagandha is rich in anti-inflammatory compounds that help regulate oil production while ensuring skin remains hydrated and nourished. It addresses various skin issues such as hyperpigmentation, stress-related skin concerns, and signs of aging. Packed with antioxidants, ashwagandha supports overall skin health by protecting against free radicals and promoting a youthful appearance.

Sandalwood:

Also known as Chandan, sandalwood is prized for its skin-brightening effects, ability to reduce dark spots, and soothing, cooling properties, making it a favoured ingredient in skincare rituals.

Saffron:

Saffron is revered for its hydrating properties that help maintain skin moisture, protect against free radicals, and impart a natural radiance to the complexion, reflecting its status as a luxurious skincare ingredient.

Turmeric:

Renowned for its antibacterial properties and anti-ageing benefits, turmeric promotes youthful and healthy skin by combating acne and blemishes while supporting skin elasticity and overall vibrancy.

These Ayurvedic herbs not only moisturise but also heal and protect the skin, reflecting Ayurveda’s holistic approach to skincare. Incorporating these natural remedies into your skincare routine can help maintain healthy, radiant skin, free from dryness and irritation.
