Prime Minister Narendra Modi files nomination papers from Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who filed his nomination papers on May 14 from the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency for a third time, declared moveable assets worth Rs 3.02 crore, disclosing that he doesn’t own any car, house, or piece of land.

In the affidavit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared total assets worth Rs 3.02 crore, the bulk of which is a fixed deposit worth Rs 2.86 crore with the State Bank of India. His total cash in hand is Rs 52,920, and he has Rs 80,304 in two bank accounts in Gandhinagar and Varanasi.

The Prime Minister has Rs 9.12 lakh as an investment in National Savings Certificates and also owns four gold rings worth Rs 2.68 lakh. His income went up to Rs 23.56 lakh in 2022-23 from Rs 11.14 lakh in 2018-19.

The Prime Minister has declared that he holds an MA degree from Gujarat University and that he graduated from Delhi University in 1978. PM passed the SSC exam from Gujarat board in 1967.

Filing his nomination from the Varanasi constituency, from where he is seeking a third term as MP, the Prime Minister said, “I am overwhelmed and emotional. I did not even realise how 10 years passed under the shade of your affection. ‘Aaj Maa Ganga ne mujhe god le liya hai’ (today, Maa Ganga has adopted me).”

The Prime Minster filed his nomination in the presence of four proposers. His two proposers, including Acharya Ganeshwar Shastri Dravid, Baijnath Patel and CM Yogi Adityanath, stayed with him when he filed papers.

PM Modi posted on ‘X’, “Filed my nomination papers as a candidate for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat. It is an honour to serve the people of this historic seat. With the blessings of the people, there have been remarkable achievements over the last decade. This pace of work will get even faster in the times to come.”

The PM sought blessings at Kashi, took a holy dip in Ganga, offered rituals and Aarti at Dashaswamedh Ghat on the auspicious occasion of Ganga Saptami and boarded MV Swami Vivekanand Ro-Ro vessel to reach Namo Ghat and to Kaal Bhairav temple ahead of filing his nomination, which accordiing to the Hindu mythology is believed to be essential to pay obeisance at the temple before proceeding for any work.

Narendra Modi, who first contested from Varanasi in 2014, is seeking a third consecutive term from there. He will be contesting against Congress’ UP unit president Ajay Rai.  Varanasi will vote in the seventh phase of the Lok Sabha election on June 1.
