Imphal: Illegal immigrants from Myanmar, a neighbouring country, are involved in murder, kidnapping, and other criminal activities. This serious issue has been raised by Manipur MLA Leishiyi Keishing. In a letter to Chief Minister N Biren Singh MLA Keishing alleged that the intruders residing in various shelter houses were engaged in fighting with the locals and many local people were beaten up by the illegal immigrants, creating law and order issues on numerous occasions. Leishiyo Keishing, a prominent legislative member of the Manipur Assembly, has recently addressed Chief Minister N Biren Singh, pressing for immediate measures to repatriate refugees back to their native villages in Myanmar.
Keishing’s letter to Chief Minister Biren Singh sheds light on the escalating issue of illegal immigration into Manipur, particularly since November 2023. With the refugee count surpassing 5800 individuals, Keishing emphasises the urgent need for decisive action.

Keishing outlines various compelling reasons necessitating the prompt deportation of the refugees. These include the strain imposed on local resources, escalating tensions within communities, and growing instances of violence over disputes related to wages and domestic matters.
The influx of refugees has exacerbated law enforcement challenges in border areas, as highlighted by Keishing. Moreover, he underscores the difficulties in enforcing local customary laws due to the refugees’ adherence to foreign customs and beliefs. In his letter, Keishing calls upon Chief Minister Biren Singh to take swift and decisive action to address this pressing issue, emphasising the importance of safeguarding the interests and well-being of local residents.
