Authorities in Assam are gearing up for the third and final phase of polling in the state, scheduled for May 7. This phase will witness voting in four parliamentary constituencies: Guwahati, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, and Dhubri. Over 75 lakh eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots, marking the culmination of the Lok Sabha elections

Guwahati: Authorities in Assam are ready for the third and final phase of polling in the state on May 7. Polls for 4 parliamentary constituencies will be held on May 7 in Assam. Over 75 lakh voters will vote in Guwahati, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, and Dhubri parliamentary constituencies in the final phase of polling in the state. This Lok Sabha election will come to an end in Assam and the entire Northeast region. Over 75 lakh people are set to exercise their franchise in the third phase of polls in Assam to decide the fate of 47 candidates. Over 26 lakh people will cast their votes in the minority-dominated Dhubri parliamentary constituency.

A total of 3024 polling stations including 1,114 critical polling stations were set up in the constituency bordering Bangladesh. AIUDF chief and sitting MP Badruddin Ajmal is seeking reelection for the fourth time from Dhubri. Former Congress minister Rickybul Hussain and NDA alliance AGP leader Javed Islam are two other key players in the constituency. Security has been beefed up at the International border for the polls. Adequate security forces were deployed in the sensitive areas to prevent any unwanted incidents.

Nearly 15 lakh voters will cast their votes in the ST-reserved Kokrajhar parliamentary constituency. There are a total of 1,862 polling stations in the parliamentary constituency with 296 polling stations identified as critical.

The prestigious Guwahati parliamentary constituency also goes to polls on May 7. Over 19 lakh voters will cast their votes in the constituency tomorrow. The ruling BJP has fielded former Deputy Mayor of Guwahati Bijulee Kalita Medhi as their candidate in place of sitting MP Queen Ojha. The ruling party is confident of making a hat-trick of wins in Guwahati against Congress candidate Meera Borthakur, a former BJP leader. In Barpeta parliamentary constituency, over 18 lakh voters will cast their votes in the final phase on May 7.

NDA alliance AGP is fielding 8 MLAs and senior party leader Phani Bhushan Chaudhury from the constituency against Congress candidate Deep Bayan and CPI(M) candidate Manuranjan Talukdar, and MLA Manuranjan Talukdar. AGP president Atul Bora said that their win is assured in Barpeta with a huge margin. Congress is nowhere in the constituency and the fight will be against CPM only. In 2019, the AGP candidate secured over 35 percent of votes in the constituency and after delimitation, it is a clear advantage for the NDA.

Meanwhile, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that BJP will show terrific results in the state to make Narendra Modi prime minister of India for the third time. He wrote on his social media handle, ‘My election campaign in Assam was like a pilgrimage. In the last 40 days, I covered the entire state and addressed 117 public meetings and road shows. It felt like a holy dip in the Ganges for me. The lively atmosphere and blessings completely rejuvenated me. I will continue to dedicate every moment of my life to the people of Assam.”
