Shillong: Meghalaya has been gripped by a spate of petrol bomb attacks, prompting Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to assure swift action and control over the situation. In less than a month, the state has witnessed seven such attacks, with two reported just on May 3, raising concerns over law enforcement’s effectiveness.
CM Sangma emphasised the government’s commitment to preventing the recurrence of such incidents, stating, “We are working towards ensuring that such incidents won’t be repeated. Police have taken steps. To make arrests on such incidents, we need proper evidence. As soon as we get the evidence, action will be taken.”
The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s resolve to uphold the rule of law, asserting, “If anybody commits a crime, the law has procedures to take action against the accused.”
Detailing the recent attacks, officials revealed that on April 30, two vehicles were set ablaze in the Western Jaintia Hills. Subsequently, on April 1st, anti-social elements carried out petrol bomb attacks at three locations in the Eastern Khasi Hills.
The recent attacks targeted the Rynjah police station, the office of Meghalaya Government Construction Corporation Limited in the Kenches Trees area, and Thana Road in the Sadar police station vicinity.
The CM assured the public that necessary measures were being taken to apprehend the perpetrators based on evidence and facts. He underscored the government’s and police’s commitment to acting within the confines of the law to maintain peace and security in the state capital.
On April 26, the residence of Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhlang Dhar was targeted in a suspected petrol bomb attack. The incident saw unidentified individuals hurling a petrol bomb at the minister’s residence, causing it to land on the balcony.
